It should be done anyway, irrespective of the platform.

Yes, that would be handy option for cabal-install in general.

My feature request for this is here: http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/hackage/ticket/481 where you can read a reply by Duncan listing some problems with this idea. -- Robin
