[Haskell-cafe] Purpose of Control.Monad.Base class

Hello, I am trying to understand the purpose of the MonadBase class. https://hackage.haskell.org/package/transformers-base-0.4.4/docs/Control-Mon... Google search did not give me any helpful answers. Please could some one help me understand the purpose of this class and also point me to any good resources. Thanks Guru
