
I don't have any research, but anecdotally, I know numerous startups, and most of them are producing web applications (usually client and server, but sometimes server only). Those doing desktop and mobile apps usually do server development, too, because in the age of ubiquitous network connectivity, applications that cannot take advantage of the Internet are few and far between. Most internal development is in the form of web apps (it's rare to see a company that produces desktop applications for in-house use), and most job postings today are for client-side developers (JavaScript, CSS/HTML, Flash) or server-side developers (Java, PHP, Ruby, etc.). I'm not convinced this is the case. There are still a great many enterprise desktop apps and mobile apps being built, and the selection bias towards internet-based applications on a mailing list (not to mention the selection bias in blogs, reddit, etc).
I'm not saying you're wrong, just that i'd love to see some research into it.
