Okay, for what it's worth, I found a solution: I reinstalled MinGHC and left the default 1.20 version of Cabal, and now everything is fine. (I had installed the newest version previously because I somehow managed to botch setup-simple execs, and I thought this would solve the problem. It actually did, but at a cost.)
