So the original article, which coined 'Appendable', did so without much thought in the middle of a long post. But it does show the thinking was about collections and there is one ONE instance of Monoid at

that is about a collection (Monoid ([] a)) that has a split operation.
The blind man at the back takes firm hold of the tail and says, "But why do we need to call it an *elephant*? No-one knows what that is. Everyone knows what a rope is, so we should just call it a rope." And that is how the elephant came to be labelled a rope in all the guide books. :-) Cheers, D
