If we go this route, it'd be nice to have a distinguishable syntax, like Gentoo's .rN, so that we don't have to remember whether it's digit four or five that signifies "administrative" changes.
Yes, it must be distinguished because we cannot constrain the upstream maintainers version policy. We do not know and should not care how many version places they use. Duncan
