Look at SYB (Data.Data, Data.Generics.*). For example, your "symbols" function can be rewritten as symbols :: Sentence -> [Symbol] symbols s = nub $ listify (const True) s "true" is not that simple, because this code is NOT boilerplate - each alternative is valuable by itself.
