Ah, It feels familiar. I'm didn't get this error, but I do recall a recent thread with similar error. However AFAIR that thread was about building on Windows, not Ubuntu. It turned out that configure script was somewhat broken and specific symbols needed for CPP where declared to be empty strings. This might be happening in your case too. I think.
