I think it'd be interesting for a student to abstract the layout model in xmonad, separating it into an independent library. Other applications could then use this library, like Yi, for other types of tiling.

I'd love to see other ideas related to Yi, too. It's a great project but on the verge of death (although the maintainer, JPB, is interested in mentoring).
