Speakers for a kickoff meetup on functional programming.
Hi, I'm planning on organizing a Meetup group about Functional Programming in Eindhoven, for next year. Currently there is very few people doing that in this area (according to the few jobs available here), and I would like to promote it. Next to that I would like to advertise Haskell, but I wanted to start with a more broader scope. My current employer is willing to sponsor this, and hence I was looking which speakers could be possible to bring for the big opening event. My first question is which speakers you know in the FP world that can clearly convey the ideas on "why functional programming matter for your company". The idea is to try to spark the interest of the different stakeholders in this city (and region). Second, I've seen some material here and there on FP propaganda, but I would like to know which ones are you favorites. Thanks a lot in advance, Damian.
Hi, I am currently working in Utrecht, assisting in teaching FP at the university. We have a big research group on FP here, indeed, so I guess somebody could speak in such an event. I don't know if that helps in some way... Alejandro 2016-10-04 11:34 GMT+02:00 Damian Nadales <damian.nadales@gmail.com>:

Hi Damian, I work for LumiGuide and we're based in Nijmegen (60km from Eindhoven). We've been using Haskell in production for over two years now. See my recent Google TechTalk on our use of functional programming to power our bicycle detection and guidance systems that we deploy all over the Netherlands: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKznN_TYjZk I would be willing to give a talk on LumiGuide or any of the functional programming techniques that we're using (Haskell, Nix, GHCJS, haskell-opencv). Hi guys, Thanks a lot for your responses. Right now I'm trying to gather a list of speakers that could convey the importance of FP in industry to an audience not familiar with FP at all. I think Bas surely has a convincing story about it ;) What about the rest? (Jurriën, Alejandro) After the first couple of meetings I guess we can move onto more specific topics, but I given the low adoption of FP in this part of the Netherlands, it'd be nice to give the first talks an introductory flavor. It is also very important that in these talks newcomers to FP can have a feeling on whether FP could help with their "software crisis", reducing costs, build more maintainable software, more efficient, etc (also managing the expectations, mentioning aspects where FP does not fare that well, of course). As for the when, my idea is to start next year (currently I'm programming in Scala for food, and I'm devoting a lot of my free time to study Haskell and build a public portfolio that could allow me to make a living out of programming in Haskell). I'll keep you posted. Thanks once more! Damian. On Tue, Oct 4, 2016 at 1:26 PM, Bas van Dijk <v.dijk.bas@gmail.com> wrote:
