Word8, not CChar. But the point was that C might have different sized characters and that these functions would still be portable even if the size of CChar changes. Or is CChar now deprecated?

No. No matter what happens with utf8, Haskell, etc., CChar is a very useful datatype to have since it is defined to be exactly equivalent to the C type 'char'.
