That's a good idea too. Is there a reason for defining acosh as above instead of acosh x = log(x + sqrt(x*x-1)) If there is one I can't remember it. :-)

Oh, it can. As well as its own problems when x is close to 1, it inherits, through the default definition of sqrt, the problems of (**) when x is near 0. --brian
