After downloading the OSX version, and typing "hugs" to start up the language, I obtain the following error: [schellekens:~] mpcs% hugs dyld: hugs can't open library: /usr/lib/libncurses.5.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2) Any suggestions? Michel.

Patch for buildings hugs with pthreads

Hi, As I mentioned on the Haskell mailing list a few days ago, a few of us at Yale are developing a system that allows Haskell code to invoke Java methods via GreenCard and the Java Native Interface. The system works quite reliably at this point, including integration of the Java and Haskell garbage collectors, and we have succesfully run a number of interesting test programs under Hugs98 on both Windows and Linux. We are currently working on a novel mechanism for mapping Java method names to Haskell function names; when that is complete, we plan to make this system available to the community. However, because the Java VM is multi-threaded, I had to rebuild Hugs from sources under Linux to use the multi-threaded version of the C library. The changes were very minor: - Pass the -D_REENTRANT flag to CC - Add -lpthread to LIBS for linking - #define DONT_PANIC to avoid catching signals used by the user-space LinuxThreads implementation. To make it as painless as possible for users to be able to use the Java/Haskell bridge, whilst minimizing the impact on others, I have made modified my local copy of hugs so that the above changes only take effect if the --with-pthreads option is given to configure. Attached is a patch with the mods. to src/Makefile.in and src/unix/configure.in to add the --with-pthreads option. Since this change is completely invisible unless hugs is built from sources using --with-pthreads, I hope that you won't object to including this in the hugs distribution. The patch is in unified diff format. If you have any problems applying the patch from the diff. file or there is anything I can do to make this patch more acceptable, please let me know. toUpper Bug?

Section 9 of the Library says that ``Function toUpper converts a letter to the corresponding upper-case letter, leaving any other character unchanged. Any Unicode letter which has an upper case equivalent is changed'' I would therefore expect map toUpper na\239fve to give NA\207VE (hopefully I've got the right values for the characters I intend). Hugs gives: Prelude> toUpper (chr 239) '\239' So I guess it doesn't work in Hugs. But it does work in ghc: Char> toUpper (chr 239) '\207' Char> Maybe if this one is going to be fixed, toUpper could be put in the correct library as well? Hello there. I am trying to install (compile the source of) Hugs-feb-2001 under Windows98, via Cygwin, but I got the message: mv: cannot move `hugs' to `/bin/#inst.7520#': No such file or directory make: *** [install_bin] Error 1 I tried to change the "--prefix" option in the ./configure step to a lot of diferent directories (rather than $HOME), but it didn't work. Dear sir, I'm a beginner in Haskell, i already bought a book about Haskell but unfortunetly it doesn't run well. My Haskell version is 1.4 and the prompt sign is prelude>, when i set the interpreter option, i made some mistake <i think>, i don't know how come my search pat setting become -P" {Hugs}\\lib;{Hugs}\\lib\\hugs;{hugs}\\lib\\exts; {hugs}\\lib\\win 32 " before i change the setting of the interpreter,when i type :? or PutStr "Hello" it run well, except when i type square 2, there're an error message Error- unable to defined "square" But now after i change the interpreter option at search path, every command that i typed will display an error message eg: Prelude> putStr "Hello" Reading file "assessed": ERROR assessed - Unable to open file "assessed" So what should i do ? i already try to change my search path to the current setting. My current search path setting is: -P"{Hugs}\\lib;{Hugs}\\lib\\hugs;{Hugs}\\lib\\win 32" I alredy try to ctrl+c at the current setting and then ctrl+v at the search path setting but when i type :s, my search path setting will become: -P" {Hugs}\\lib;{Hugs}\\lib\\hugs;{hugs}\\lib\\exts; {hugs}\\lib\\win 32 " in my terminal display screen. And from that i know, that when i type \ on the search path, it'll display \\ on the current setting display <after i type :s on the terminal display>.
