After downloading the OSX version, and typing "hugs" to start up the language, I obtain the following error: [schellekens:~] mpcs% hugs dyld: hugs can't open library: /usr/lib/libncurses.5.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2) Any suggestions? Michel.

Both WinHugs and command line hugs have the same bug. start hugs with -98 option and try the following program: class Monad m => ExMonad where raise :: String-> m a instead of reporting an error, an internal error is raised: INTERNAL ERROR: inheritFundeps - predicate failed to match it's own head! hugs / ghc difference over '(..)' imports

There is a difference between hugs and ghc in how they treat imports with the '(..)' notation. Here's my example: module CTree( --other stuff Const(..) ) where import ATree (Const) --const has constructors CInt, CChar, CStr under hugs this module exports CInt, CChar, CStr but under ghc it does not. Under ghc it only exports the constructors if I import 'Const' like this: import ATree (Const(..)) I don't know which is the right behaviour w.r.t. the H98 standard, but it tripped me up. Duncan

Regards, - Zhanyong Wan ################################################ Hi, I have been a big fan of Haskell's layout rules, but was got by them lately. Here's what I was doing. I wrote something like: > foo = > ... > where > bar = ... > > ... > -- 600 lines of Haskell code suppressed > > baz = ... Unsurprisingly, when I load this module in Hugs, I can use baz as it is in the top level. Later, I had a better implementation for foo, so I no longer needed the local definition for bar. I made the change, but unfortunately forgot to remove the "where" keyword, so the code became: > foo = > ... > where > > ... > -- 600 lines of Haskell code suppressed > > baz = ... and it compiled! However, when I tried to use baz, Hugs complained that it's undefined. Why? Because the compiler thinks that *all the code* (that is, 600+ lines) after the dangling "where" is just local definitions to foo. I was lucky to spot the source of the problem quickly because I knew I recently changed that line, but in general, this kind of error can be very hard to locate. (In my case, the offending code is 600 lines away from where the bug is manifested, and the number can be arbitrarily high.) I imagine this would be particularly scary to Haskell beginners and may even turn them away. Can't we require that a local definition be more indented than the enclosing definition? That way my code would've been rejected by the compiler, and the error message (something like "Empty where-clause on line xxx") can actually be helpful. Error messages from runhugs

The error messages from runhugs seem to have gotten much worse in the version in the repository. Using old runhugs, we get: /usr/bin/runhugs -98 +o ADL3 test runhugs: Error occurred Reading file "ADL3.lhs": Reading file "/usr/share/hugs98/lib/System.hs": Reading file "Parsec": ERROR Parsec - Unable to open file "Parsec" Ooops, I guess I should put Parsec on my path. Using the version in the CVS repository, we get: $HOME/local/bin/runhugs -98 +o ADL3 test runhugs: Unable to initialise Hugs Gee, I'm not sure what I did wrong. Any chance the informative error messages can be restored? It's possible that you want to suppress the error message sometimes - so that people don't get Haskell-related error messages when using my super-duper Haskell version of cat or ls. That's cool - but there has to be a way to print the error message so that I can debug it. parser error on :info command

hugs gets confused by the following command :info . Unknown module `' Unknown reference `' Other operators work fine: :info + infixl 6 + (+) :: Num a => a -> a -> a -- class member It looks like the parser is confusing the (.) operator with the dot in 'Module.value' If this is difficult, maybe the info command could accept bracketed operators like the :type command. :type (.) Hi, if I want to use the following library, I get an error message. I'm using the binary distribution for Windows (hugs98-Dec2001.msi). I already checked the source distribution to see if there are any difference, but the files are the same. infix operator parsing problem

I have the following fragment in a module that is accepted by ghc but not by hugs. It seems like it should be ok to me since infixr 9 . infixr 0 $> Here's the offending line tag = (singleton . tagWith pos $>) It works if I bracket it like this: tag = ((singleton . tagWith pos) $>) Here's a self contained example: module Foo where infixr 5 $$ infixr 4 $$$ foo = (id $$ id $$$) ($$) = id ($$$) = id ghc acepts this, so long as $$$ has lower precedence than $$, otherwise it complains: Foo.hs:6: The operator `$$$' [infixr 5] of a section must have lower precedence than the operand `($$)' [infixr 4] in the section: `((id $$ id) $$$)' Duncan

MS installer fails.

Hi! I'm trying to install hugs on my win2k (no sp) without success. After pressing the 'Next' button on the 'Confirm Installation' dialog the installer shows another dialog with 'Installation Incomplete' msg and "The installer was interrupted before Hugs 98 -December 2001 could be installed. You need to restart the installer to try again". I've activated the installer log and append the log file. The other msi files available on your site fails too.
