Hi (I guess mainly Ross, but others might be able to help as well) http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/hugs/ticket/29 has a comment that pretty much describes what is happening - I can fix it, but don't know what else I might break, and it would likely break on Linux too. This is the single critical bug for the next release that is assigned to me, so I have an interest in fixing it :) Thanks Neil

This can be seen in the doc/useres_guide/Makefile.am file, whose '$(HTML)' target populates the '$(ROOT)' directory with all the documentation files that will be installed. The problem is that even if docbook2html is not available, the package installs two files in the target documentation directory: '$(CSS_FILE)' and '$(IMAGE)', both of which are useless without the real documents in place. This is not a big problem but makes the resulting installation "ugly". If I did not want to build documentation in the first place, I do not want any related files to be installed. The solution is to only installs those files when the docbook2html utility is available. (I'm not too familiar with Trac, so I'm going to submit this and hope that I can later attach the proposed patch... as Bugzilla does.) Submitted by: Julio M. For example, the two include, at least, the Cabal, base and haskell98 packages. These packages are built and installed by the "global" build procedure through the bootstrapping interpreter, using the not-yet-installed Cabal. However, the installation prefix is not propagated to the built packages resulting in incorrect paths in the installed files. In my case, I'm using the following to configure Hugs (really, this is the command the NetBSD package uses): {{{ ./configure --prefix=/usr/pkg }}} After installation, the Paths_base.hs file of the installed packages looks like: {{{ bindir = "/usr/local/bin" libdir = "/usr/local/lib/hugs/packages/base" datadir = "/usr/local/share/base-1.0" libexecdir = "/usr/local/libexec" }}} And similarly for all other Paths_base.hs files in other packages. The above inconsistencies in the installed paths files lead to runtime problems later. For example, when running the installed Cabal with the installed Hugs (not the bootstrapping one) to configure other packages, the utility is unable to find some of its files. The attached patch fixes this issue by propagating prefix's value to the programs executed in the middle of the build procedure. I'm afraid this problem might also affect other variables that should be propagated but which are not currently. Submitted by: Julio M. Floating point issues

Hi, I had the following issue reported to me by Albert (please CC him on responses), which if it is correct is certainly very confusing. Consider the following examples: Hugs> 3 ** 2 9.0 Hugs> 3 ** 2 :: Float 9.0 Hugs> 3 ** 2 :: Double 9.0 Hugs> 3 ** 2 == 9 False Hugs> 3 ** 2 == (9::Double) False Hugs> 3 ** 2 == (9::Float) True Note that GHC gets the sensible answer of True for all these cases. I also tested this on Linux Hugs with the same results as WinHugs. This doesn't seem that logical - I know floating point == is just asking for trouble, but why is the less precise one keeping the correct answer? Also it seems weird not to have the property that read . show = id and that show a == show b => a == b Thanks Neil

Bug: instances from non-imported files used

Hi, With the following setup: -- module A where data A = A -- module B where import A b = show A -- module C where import A instance Show A where show A = "A" -- import B import C main = print "hello" -- :load B fails, complaining that there is no Show instance for A, which is correct. However, :load Main succeeds, even though the module B that it imports is valid. It seems that the show instance of C is used in B, even though the module B does not import (even transitively) C. GHC fails with: ./B.hs:6:4: No instance for (Show A) arising from use of `show' at ./B.hs:6:4-7 Probable fix: add an instance declaration for (Show A) In the definition of `b': b = show A Using Hugs May 2006 on Windows. Hi, if you desugar the definition that's causing the type error, perhaps it becomes a little bit clearer what's going on, i.e., from problematic :: MyAnnotatedType Int problematic = defaultVal{theInt=42,theAnnotation=10} you expand this to problematic' = case defaultVal of { MAT a b c -> MAT 42 b 10 } Clearly, the type of 'c' is ambiguous here.
