Hugs, Mac OS X 10.1.5, and pathnames

In OS X, pathnames have two distinct syntaxes. The GUI uses the pre-X syntax, in which a pathname begins with a volume name and the separator is `:', as in Macintosh HD:Users:ham:Documents:whatever.hs In the Darwin (i.e., unix) command-line "underworld", a pathname begins with /Volumes, spaces are escaped with `\', and the separator is `/', as in /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Users/ham/Documents/whatever.hs When you drag a file icon onto the command line, Terminal does the right thing-- it converts the pathname from the GUI syntax to the Darwin syntax, and utilities such as more work just as they should. Hugs, however, doesn't do so well. For example, Prelude> :l /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Users/ham/Documents/whatever.hs Reading file "/Volumes/Macintosh\": ERROR "/Volumes/Macintosh\" - Unable to open file "/Volumes/Macintosh\" Quoting the pathname changes the problem, but doesn't cure it: Prelude> :l "/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Users/ham/Documents/whatever.hs" ERROR - Missing `\' terminating string literal gap Apparently what's confusing Hugs is the `\', because removing it cures the problem: Prelude> :l "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users/ham/Documents/whatever.hs" Reading file "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users/ham/Documents/whatever.hs": Is this problem unavoidable, or is it just an oversight? hugs ffi - question thats been bugging me for some time

In docs/ffi-notes.txt, I find the following: ------------------------------------------------------------ o foreign export static is not implemented. You can code around this by writing: foreign import dynamic foo_dynamic :: Addr -> (A -> B -> C) foreign label foo_addr :: Addr foo = foo_dynamic foo_addr instead of: foreign import foo :: A -> B -> C ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does anyone understand what this is saying? I can't grok it. The work around presented here seems to have nothing to do with foriegn export static. It looks like a workaround to not having foreign IMPORT static. (Which we of course dont need a workaround for :)). Is something extremely tricky going on or am i just dense? Anyway, just curious, I have not had any trouble working around by passing pointers to the C-side using foreign export dynamic. I have just wondered about this for a long long time :)

It also passes the Hugs test suite (modulo the extra precision). Any testimonials?

FranTK installation

New to Haskell _and_ FranTK I am trying to install both. So far I have: 1. installed Hugs98 (seems to work) 2. installed TCL/TK (demos work fine) 3. installed FranTK that is were I am stuck. Since I am running Windows, I have modified tclhugs98.bat to point to the right directories. I have also 4. installed TclHaskell (demos work just fine) Has anybody managed to run the FranTK demo? Hi, my name is Tomas Falemo and I'm a student at Chalmers University. I'm currently working on a Haskell project for a course in advanced fuinctional programming and I intend to build my project using Fran as a vital cornerstone. But now I seem to have run in to serious problem, namely I can't find Fran anywhere... All references I have found seems to end up at http://research.microsoft.com/~conal/fran/ which only yields a file-not-found exception. I've been told this is due to Conal Elliott leaving Microsoft, but that does not help me much. Now to my question, is there anyone out there who knows where I can find a copy of Fran? A new release of Hugs98 is just around the corner, introducing a number of worthwhile extensions and enhancements (see announcement blurb at the end of this message.) ncurses

O.k., I am really sorry for this because I am sure it has been asked before, I just can't find the answer. I installed HUGS on my iBook with OS10.1 and get a "dyld: hugs can't open library: /usr/lib/libncurses.5.dylib" error. I don't have libncurses.5.dylib on my system. I compiled ncurses but didn't get a dynamic lib so now what? Any help sure would be great. Thanks a bunch. Brian
