Installing libraries (specifically haskore)

Howdy, I have hugs98 installed and working (on Mac OSX), and I'm now trying to 'install' haskore (this is my motivation for trying haskell) http://www.haskell.org/haskore . I have downloaded haskore but am not sure how to install it. The readme file for haskore says The best way to use the system with Hugs is to drop the entire Haskore directory into Hugs/lib (replacing the one that's there). All of the files except this README file are in the directory Src. I have no such directory, Hugs/lib. The readme files is seven years old so it is apparently talking about how things were done in 2000. The most likelly candidate (as the equivalent to Hugs/lib) I find is /opt/local/lib/hugs , or perhaps one of its subdirectories (oldlib, programs, and packages all seem like plausible choices). Can anyone tell me where I should put the Haskore directory? Further, I don't see any previous version of haskore (if I did, I guess that would answer that question). I presume it is no longer distributed with hugs98. Am I right, or should I expect to find it somewhere on my hard drive as part of the hugs98 distribution? I have another question about haskore, but it is probably not appropriate for this list so please ignore it unless you are curious. The haskore readme also says 1) "Haskore.lhs" will load the entire basic Haskore system. If your Hugs has the proper paths set up, once you drop this directory into Hugs/lib, you should be able to just say "import Haskore" and everything should work correctly. I find no file nor directory named "Haskore.lhs" in the distribution. I find a ""Haskore.hs"; is the paragraph above just a typo? Thanks for any help, Bob H P.S. Thanks for the help this morning.

The message "---> cleaning hugs98" is generated after a successful install as macports (the new name for darwinports) cleans up after itself. Did you try typing "hugs" at the command prompt? The "requested variant" stuff is just the macports infrastructure checking if there is architecture specific information in the port file. In the case of hugs, there isn't any. (You're trying to build on the OS X implementation of Darwin --- variants macosx and darwin in the log --- running on an i386 architecture.) "Request variant darwin not provided by port hugs98" just means that the portfile has no special instructions for configuring hugs98 on darwin; rather the hugs98 software distribution itself can figure out what to do in this case. If you want to see a more complicated portfile that handles all kinds of special cases, have a look at the ghc portfile. Howdy, Tried to install HUGS for the first time, using DarwinPorts. My machine is an intel iMac running OSX 10.4.8. I have used DarwinPorts before, and I updated it to the latest version before attempting to install HUGS. I followed the instructions on http://hugs98.darwinports.com/ , except that I changed them per the fact that my ports are stored in /opt/var/local/db/pports instead of the /opt/local/bin/portslocation/dports shown in the instructions. My first attempt to install HUGS took something like 20 minutes as it downloaded and built dependent packages. I had used the -d option to port which showed me too much info, but one of the last things it showed me was "---> cleaning hugs98", and the suggested commands such as "man hugs98" fail, so I conclude that it didn't install properly. Subsequent attempts (sudo port -d install hugs98) give me the detail shown at the end of this message. I am particularly suprised by "Requested variant darwin is not provided by port hugs98". The path .../dports/sources/rsync.rsync.darwinports.org_dpupdate_dports/language/hugs98 exists on my machine. If I delete it and attempt to reinstall, will I see anything different? Anyone have any ideas? Hugs on Macs

Good evening, I am pretty new in the Macs environment and my target is to install Hugs Haskell on this system. I have done this on a test machine via Darwin Ports following the descriptions found in the web. Now my system administrator told me that this procedure is not suitable for the productive system, because Darwin Ports allows uncontrolled installation working out of the usual rights context. Therefore I have some questions: 1) Is there a more suitable way to overcome the mentioned Darwin Ports difficulties? 2) Did someone use Darwin Ports to install Hugs and solved the mentioned difficulties (perhaps using the sudo command)? Hugs Sep 2006 build issues

Hi, I've recently started working with Haskell (a new years resolution to learn something new and different) and hugs seemed to be the best way to start. I first installed the March 2005 version from the OpenBSD ports system, but, that wasn't the latest so that had to change. I first installed the Sep 2006 one on Solaris 8 and Linux (Fedora Core 1) and found that I had to add -L/usr/X11R6/lib to the "X11" line in X11.cabal. Once that was done both of the builds seemed sucessful. Then we started on the problem children all running OpenBSD. OpenBSD was harder for seemingly no coherent reason. The procedure ended up being: gmake EXTRA_CONFIGURE_OPTS="--prefix=/home/edoneel/local-`uname -m` --enable-ffi --with-pthreads" # Link things that didn't, for what ever reason, get built the first time. ln ./libraries/bootlib/Foreign/C/Error.so hugsdir/packages/base/Foreign/C/ ln ./libraries/bootlib/Foreign/Marshal/*.so hugsdir/packages/base/Foreign/Marshal ln ./libraries/bootlib/Foreign/Ptr.so hugsdir/packages/base/Foreign/ ln ./libraries/bootlib/System/Posix/Internals.so hugsdir/packages/base/System/Posix/ # force the packages to be rebuilt rm libraries/bootlib/.stamp rm -rf hugsdir/programs/ gmake EXTRA_CONFIGURE_OPTS="--prefix=/home/edoneel/local-`uname -m` --enable-ffi --with-pthreads" . The silly ln commands in the middle are becuase around line 149 of ./libraries/bootlib/Distribution/Simple/Hugs.hs it seems that there are no FFI libraries to compile. Sadly I'm not knowledgeable enough to see the problem. Anyway, after the above steps Hugs Sep 2006 runs on OpenBSD Sparc, Sparc64 and PPC and works very nicly. OpenGL didn't build, but I don't need that for now. Cheers, and thanks for Hugs, it's quite nice. bruce
