what to work on next?
by John Meacham 30 Jun '09

30 Jun '09

I figured I'd ask all of you, what do you think the most important thing to work on in jhc right now is? I hit a major milestone by being able to compile a whole host of packages unchanged. Jhc alreadly works admirably as a cross compiler and generates pretty speedy code. It would be very easy for me to get lost in coming up with new, wacky optimizations. So, what do you want to see before that happens? John -- John Meacham - ⑆repetae.net⑆john⑈ - http://notanumber.net/

It is mainly a haskell 98 compiler, but does have several extensions. However, not all of them correspond to GHC extensions and it is missing some notable ones such as MPTCs, but has some other interesting ones such as first class existential types. ANNOUNCE: jhc 0.6.1
by John Meacham 23 Jun '09

23 Jun '09

Hi, this is to announce the release of jhc 0.6.1. The jhc homepage with distribution information is at http://repetae.net/computer/jhc/ The main new feature in this release is a much simplified cross-compilation mechanism. While cross-compilation was always possible with jhc, it used to involve manually copying the C file and calling gcc with the right options on it, now this is taken care of by jhc. A (popular) example would be setting up an iPhone cross compilation target. For instance with the SDK setup I have, I would simply add the following to a file ~/.jhc/targets.ini [iphone] cc=arm-apple-darwin cflags+=-I/usr/local/arm-apple-darwin/include merge=le32 then you can compile iphone binaries with ; jhc --cross -miphone HelloWorld.hs the targets mechanism is extensible at run-time and I have included native unix, win32, osx-intel and osx-powerpc targets. But certainly many more interesting ones are possible. Some I have tested have been a nokia N770 as a target and an atheros MIPS based router running dd-wrt. There is more information on cross compilation in the jhc manual at http://repetae.net/computer/jhc/manual.html#crosscompilation jhc is also now available in the repetae yum repository which you can get at via ; rpm -i http://repetae.net/yum/repetae-repo-1.0-3.noarch.rpm ; yum install jhc Enjoy! by coreyoconnor＠gmail.com 22 Jun '09

22 Jun '09

Mon Jun 22 20:04:11 PDT 2009 coreyoconnor(a)gmail.com * automake/autoconf default to autodetecting base-4 and using that if detected This patch changes configure to autodetect the base-4 package and modifies the PACKAGES makefile variable to include base-4 (along with syb) if base-4 is detected. This also adds --enable-base-4 and --disable-base-4 options to configure. Detection of base 4 package can be improved.

darcs patch: Changing remaining references to jhc_man to man

Sun Jun 21 19:33:50 PDT 2009 coreyoconnor(a)gmail.com * Changing remaining references to jhc_man to man The install depended on the man pages being built but no such dependency was defined. I believe the makefile was halfway between moving from jhc_man to man as the target name. If so I added the required dependencies and renamed remaining jhc_man references

darcs patch: Correct dependencies for JHC lib targets
by coreyoconnor＠gmail.com 21 Jun '09

21 Jun '09

Sun Jun 21 19:30:04 PDT 2009 coreyoconnor(a)gmail.com * Correct dependencies for JHC lib targets Added the libs target to local-all. Previously the libs target was in an install hook which resulted in the libs being built as the user executing "make install" Modifications to the sources the JHC libs did not result in a recompile of the lib as expected. Made the JHC_LIBS targets phony. This causes them to be executed regardless of the state of the target file. JHC appears to perform the required dependency tracking just fine.

darcs patch: HsFFI.h is not in C include path.

Sun Jun 21 19:27:03 PDT 2009 coreyoconnor(a)gmail.com * HsFFI.h is not in C include path. Unable to compile due to missing HsFFI.h. I think the intention is to use the include file it the "data" folder. Updating Makefile accordingly.
