flag to compile a single module?

I was just thinking that it would be great jhc would compile just a single module (and its dependencies, of course) when that module was requested (instead of complaining about a lack of a main function). This would be handy for testing, but also could enable parallel builds, assuming that jhc won't trash the ho cache if two builds are run simultaneously (which is important anyhow... e.g. if building two versions of the same code at the same time). I'm imagining one could just request either a module or a hs file: jhc Foo.Bar or jhc Foo/Bar.hs Or am I missing something and is this already possible? David

Hi John, I'm getting the following error now: Compiling... [ 1 of 18] Jhc.AltIO ./src/E/FromHs.hs:(869,4)-(871,30): Irrefutable pattern failed for pattern (p : ps) which is the irrefutable pattern in tinyHeads. Unfortunately, I'm still pretty clueless about debugging jhc itself. I'm not sure what this function is doing, or how to figure out which code it's working on... :( P.S. You should be able to reproduce this using a darcs get http://abridgegame.org/concurrency, and trying to build jhc/Prelude.hs. -- David Roundy

Hi John, I'm getting the following failure, which looks to me like a compiler bug. I've cleared my cache, and rebuilt jhc from scratch, so this time I think it's a real bug. Compiling... [ 1 of 13] System.C.Stdio user error (lookupExtTypeInfo: (ELit ((#2#) (ELit (Jhc.Prim.World__::ESort #)) (ELit (Foreign.C.Types.CInt::ESort *))::ESort #),ELit ((#2#) (ELit (Jhc.Prim.World__::ESort #)) (ELit (Foreign.C.Types.CInt::ESort *))::ESort #))) The code is unfortunately somewhat large. You can (once again) get it at darcs get http://abridgegame.org/concurrency You can either build it using a very recent franchise and ./Setup.hs configure --jhc, or you could use the attached base-alt.config, and compile with something like jhc -ijhc -ibase -ialt --noauto -isrc --dependencies base-alt.jhc-deps --build-hl base-alt.config As you may be able to gather, I've not yet been able to kick the habit of hacking on jhc's library. It's possible that this error is due to a bug I've introduced (I certainly introduced plenty along the way), but since it type checked, I think it ought to succeed in the compile stage. -- David Roundy

Hi John, This is an attempt to move towards the point where I could try implementing concurrent IO. I am not sure whether this approach will work at all, so I'll appreciate your feedback. I'll probably send a separate email with more details on what I'm thinking. This patch is essentially a cleanup, which moves the newtype of IO into Jhc.IO and avoids exporting its constructor. The hope is that I can later change the type of IO, perhaps to something like newtype OldIO a = IO (World__ -> (# World__, a #)) newtype IO a = IO { runIO :: (a -> ThreadState -> OldIO ()) -- ^ a continuation -> ThreadState -- ^ the current state -> OldIO () } -- ^ the combined computation although I'd also want to figure out how to work exceptions into the picture. Anyhow, I think this patch is reasonable on its own. My greatest uncertainty at the moment due to my lack of understanding of how you deal with FFI calls. i.e. how is the code for a delcaration like foreign import ccall "stdio.h jhc_utf8_putc" c_putc :: Ptr CFile -> Int -> IO () generated? I imagine that some work will have to happen in the core compiler in order for this import to generate a call to Jhc.IO.io (which is what I'd like). That's all for now... Hi John, Part of this is very hokey, since I had trouble tracking which files led to which libraries (your data types are a bit confusing). I'm also flexible on the option naming and details (e.g. is it important to be able to handle filenames with embedded newlines?). The idea, obviously, is to enable franchise to know when to rebuild. It could also be used with Makefiles, so we might also prefer a more make-friendly output. Oh, and it doesn't track dependencies on included files. To do that, we'd need help from the C preprocessor, which would be nice to add--but not critical.
