Network.Socket exports HostAddress as a Word32 in network byte order because it is a low-level library - a higher-level abstraction layer should definitely provide an abstract version of this. Hi, I've found myself needing to show a SockAddr type left and right in my code. Is it possible to add the appropriate definition to Network.Socket? Functional MetaPost Interim

I have another interim release of the Functional MetaPost library to add to its rich history of interim releases. I've moved the files into a hierarchical namespace and generally cleaned the code up to resolve import conflicts, fix minor problems with GHC 6.x and Hugs, etc. You'll find my version here: http://cryp.to/funcmp/ No documentation at all. I hope to be able to turn this into a nice Haskell package, because I think FuncMP is a wonderful library. It would, however, be much more likely that this happens if I found one or two other kind souls who'd help. So if you have made some changes to FuncMP, too, just "darcs send" them away. Well, I hope anyone finds this useful. Peter

Block-I/O in Haskell

In the spirit of "release early, release often", I have made a small library available at http://cryp.to/blockio/ ..., which provides a StateT wrapper for IO plus a number of useful primitives to do fast, block-oriented I/O in Haskell. It's by no means complete nor stable nor useful, but it comes with a version of the word-counting program that, on my machine, beats the version from Tomasz Zielonka. :-) It is still under development, but the API should be stable. Documenting libraries

Hi, One of my complaints is having to look many different places for library docs. So, I started whipping together some scripts to call Haddock to generate a comprehensive linked library reference. I've added Cabal, crypto, hsemail, HUnit, MissingH, and WASHMail to the standard library already. Take a look: http://www.complete.org/fs/hclr/ and let me know what you think. One thing the Haskell community currently lacks, and could really do with, is a simple way to for people who have a library to add it to //www.haskell.org/libraries/ (or somewhere similar), without requiring intervention by the web-site manager. All that's needed is a web form where the contributor can fill in the name of her library, type comments about it, and point to the download. Doubtless there is scope for endless potential sophistication... adding a new version of an old library, a decent way to categorise libraries under headings that aren't just hardwired, some way of filtering ("show me the ones that are nhc-compatible"), ways for library consumers to record star-ratings and reviews so that excellent libraries are visibly rewarded, etc. Does anyone feel like doing this? You'd be famous for ever! (Shae springs to mind for some reason...) Simon

We're not going to be including any significant new libraries with GHC in the future, the idea is that you get everything by installing packages (just like Perl & co.). Cheers, Simon

Using Cabal for a simple wrapper library

Hello I am trying to use Cabal for a small library that essentially just wraps a C library. There seems to be no (documented) way of linking the produced library with an external library. Basically I have libfoo.so and libfoo.a, and would need the cabalized package to link to either of them. I am trying to use Distribution.Simple and my Setup.description looks like: Name: qdbm Version: 0.1 License: LGPL Copyright: (c) Einar Karttunen 2004 Stability: alpha Build-Depends: haskell-src Modules: Database.QDBM.Depot Maintainer: Einar Karttunen <ekarttun(a)cs.helsinki.fi> Extra-Libs: qdbm Extensions: ForeignFunctionInterface -- -fglasgow-exts is needed for data without a constructor -- -#include is a hack -- -cpp needs a better way of saying it -- And how should the library be linked really?
