There are too many error handling conventions used in library code!

This article on the 8 different error handling strategies various common Haskell libs use: http://www.randomhacks.net/articles/2007/03/10/haskell-8-ways-to-report-err… got me thinking: we need to standardise/recommend a small set of methods for library error handling. The lack of consistent error reporting between libs results in verbose code, as we're not able to use a single error handling technique when gluing together code from different libs (i.e. we can't just use Maybe or Either/ErrorT). (It's always nice when you *can* use, say, a Maybe monad to glue code from a number of sources, but eventually you reach code with a different error system, and the Maybe monad breaks down). So, some questions I think we can tackle: * can we identify error handling strategies from the list that should not be used anymore? (throwDyn?) * can we move some of the outlying libraries to a more consistent error framework? * do we need more support for gluing together our different error systems? (it should be easier to glue code using , say, Maybe/Either). * what role does MonadError play here, as a generic error handler? * can we make precise recommendations about which error strategies to use? -- Don

HUnit broken for GHC

Hello all, I noticed that HUnit does not work for GHC when trying to build some HUnit test cases for my code. There is already an (old) entry in the GHC bugtracker http://cvs.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/476 about this issue, which contained a patch. Somehow, this patch never made it into the HUnit repository. I have tried out the patch with the HUnit and GHC fresh from darcs, and it seemed to work. So my question is: what is the procedure for getting this patch into the official darcs repository? A simple "darcs send"? Thanks, Martin

Ord instance for Data.Map?

I wonder whether the Ord instance is a good choice as constraint for Data.Map, Data.Set and so on. I want to manage complex numbers and residue classes in a set, or polynomials as keys of maps, but I hesitate to make them instances of Ord, because "a<b" shall remain a type error for complex numbers, residue classes and polynomials. Also in Haskore we abuse Ord instance to get canonical form of arranged notes. However there is no notion of magnitude for notes, so the Ord instance is rather artificial. I have a work-around in mind: I could introduce class Eq a => Indexable a where compareIndex :: a -> a -> Ordering then make several mathematical object types instances of this class. Then make a wrapper type newtype IndexableToOrd a = Cons a which maps the Indexable instance to an Ord instance: instance Indexable a => Ord (IndexableToOrd a) where compareIndex (Cons x) (Cons y) = compare x y Then I do not insert complex numbers immediately in a set, but wrap them in IndexableToOrd and insert the wrapped values in a set. Cumbersome, isn't it? So my question is: Was the Ord constraint for Data.Map a good idea? If yes, are there simpler work-arounds than mine? I think, that '<' and '>' imply something like comparisons of magnitudes and the Data.Map doesn't require that notion and it is happy with any total ordering. Btw. is there a Data.Map.unzip?

Proposal: ByteString based datagram communication (Ticket #1238 )

I've made a proposal to add ByteString based datagram communication to Network.Socket and Network. Details are at: http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/1238#preview I rushed to get this done before I go on a trip tomorrow so I haven't completed testing and won't be available to discuss it for the next 9 days. As such, if discussion is needed, an extended deadline would be appreciated. Testing windows is a bit awkward for me since I don't have a windows machine, so if anyone can test that platform I'd be very appreciative. I'll try to work through the problems I was having with hugs and test when I get back unless someone else wants to test it first. Is there already a list class?

Hello. Is here the right place to request a list class? eg class List l e where (:) :: e -> l e -> l e head :: .. This might be used in Data.Set, Data.Map class StorableAsList l e t where fromList :: l e -> t toList :: t -> l e I'd like to help implementing/ writing it. There is a fst and a snd function. run..Process borrow handles and escape argumentes - missing function?

Couldn't find a function which does this: use stdin/out/err of the main application and escapes the passed arguments automatically. I want to call "ssh user@host command" (runCommand :: String -> IO () ) command may contain redirection > so I would have to escape them. I don't want to have to do that I can pass a list of args to runProcess.. fine. So I can use runProcess ... (Just stdin) (Just stdout) ... to borrow the handles ? No: the comments say: -- Any 'Handle's passed to 'runProcess' are placed immediately in the closed state. That's not what I want. So I think there is still a function missing ? Cale has pointed me to hsh so I'll have a look there.. Marc

Hi I was looking for the function inlinePerformIO, and was quite shocked when I found it in the module "Data.ByteString.Base". This is clearly entirely the wrong place for it to go, so could we get it moved before it has to remain in this totally non-logical place forever? Thanks Neil

cabal ignores ld-options?

Hello, I am trying to get cabal to link an object file with a library. I tried naming it in an ld-options: line, but it didn't show up in the arguments to 'ld'. Is this the correct behaviour? I am using ghc-6.6.20070420. Thanks, Frederik
