Due to popular demand, the new SOE implementation based on Gtk2Hs is now available separately: http://haskell.org/~duncan/soegtk-0.9.10.tar.gz http://haskell.org/~duncan/soegtk-0.9.10.zip or darcs get http://haskell.org/~duncan/soegtk/ It works with the latest released version of Gtk2Hs, ie version 0.9.10 It works at least on Linux and Windows. It's packaged with Cabal. The rendering quality is better than the original HGL version. Here's a side-by-side comparison: http://haskell.org/~duncan/gtk2hs/SOE-cairo.png and it works with GHC on Windows, which the original doesn't. Sadly it doesn't work with Hugs98 (but I hear that the HGL version does work with Hugs98). There may be some slight differences in the semantics from the original. ThreadId gripe

Hi, The 'Show' instance for ThreadId produces stuff like "ThreadId 1" - not very concise. Is there an simple way to turn it into an Int or Integer so I can call 'show' on that? Building cabal with cabal fails?

Hi, Using GHC 6.4.2, in prepration for some cabal hacking, I decided to download Cabal from darcs and install it. darcs get http://darcs.haskell.org/packages/Cabal --partial cd Cabal runhaskell Setup configure And I get the error: ./Distribution/Simple.hs:61:1: lexical error Should this work? Cabal patch: Add setup haddock --hoogle option

Hi, The attached patch adds support for the --hoogle option to the haddock target. Tested on the base package, now running: runhaskell Setup haddock --hoogle Gives the file base-2.0.txt which can then be fed into Hoogle properly. Anything wrong with it? If not, can it be applied? Thanks Neil

what's in a package name?

I just tried creating my first package with Cabal, and chose a package version, "0", that obeys the rules documented by Cabal: "a sequence of one or more integers separated by dots"[1]. But at the end of the build, I got "ghc-pkg: ambiguous package identifier: foo-0". (I am using ghc 6.4.2.) Simon Marlow already commented on this silly problem[2], but it appears it was never resolved. Can someone just decide on the systax of a package identifier? Cabal's documented rules seem sane to me: A package is identified by a globally-unique package name, which consists of one or more alphanumeric words separated by hyphens. To avoid ambiguity, each of these words should contain at least one letter.... A particular version of the package is distinguished by a version number, consisting of a sequence of one or more integers separated by dots. These can be combined to form a single text string called the package ID, using a hyphen to separate the name from the version, e.g. “HUnit-1.1”. Replacing Network.CGI with NewCGI

Any users of Network.CGI here? I would like to propose replacing the current Network.CGI module with what is now known as Network.NewCGI [2]. This has been mentioned briefly before [1]. The new module is backwards compatible with the old one (except for the export of Text.Html.Html, which is now Text.XHtml.Html). Here is what I would like to do: - Remove Network.CGI from the network package. - Change the name of Network.NewCGI to Network.CGI - Add the cgi package to http://darcs.haskell.org/packages/ - Add the xhtml package [3] to http://darcs.haskell.org/packages/ This is needed since the cgi package uses it to generate error pages. Any comments, suggestions, or objections? Here is a summary of the features of NewCGI: - Access to CGI parameters (e.g. form input) from both GET and POST requests. - Access to CGI environment variables. - Ability to set arbitrary response headers. - Support for HTTP cookies. - An efficient implementation of multipart/form-data using Data.ByteString. darcs patch: ObjectIO Data.FiniteMap -> Data.Map fix

Hi Krasimir, (I'm CCing libraries@ because that's where darcs send would send this) Nightly builds for ghc/mingw32 have been recently failing because ObjectIO-package won't build now that FiniteMap has been removed. Attached is a patch that uses Data.Map instead. I have not tried if it works, merely that it compiles. Cabal Questions

Hi, I want to use a preprocessor (haskell source extensions) on .xhs files in the Hoogle repo. This isn't a preprocessor that is known about by Cabal as far as I can tell, so I need to do "something". I remember that one of the main drives behind Cabal was so that additional preprocessors could be specified by the individual program. I remembered that lambdabot uses a preprocessor, but sadly that uses GHC specific preprocessor flags, and so isn't using the cabal architecture for doing this. How does Cabal do this? Three questions about patch to cabal

Hello, I ran into a problem while trying to debianize libraries that use cabal. I want to provide profiling libraries by default, but I want them to be provided in a seperate .deb, so that you do not have to install them if you don't need them. So for 'mylib' I would generate two .debs: libghc6-mylib-dev libghc6-mylib-prof Cabal already has an --enable-library-profiling flag, but this causes the profiling and non-profiling libraries to be compiled at the same time into the same directory tree. This means I have to use regular expression to try to move the profiling libraries into a seperate package. I think a better solution would be to provide a mechanism to disable building the vanilla libraries, such as: --enable-library-vanilla --disable-library-vanilla This could also be extended to support other flags in the future, like: --enable/disable-library-parallel --enable/disable-library-bytecode --enable/disable-library-native This scheme seems mostly fine. Package maintainers can do multiple passes building exactly what they want on each pass. People compiling from source can just enable everything they want and build in a single pass. So, I have three questions: (1) Flag sanity checking Not all combinations of flags are sensible. For example, we can already specify: --disable-library-profiling --enable-executable-profiling Which will probably fail unless the executable does not depend on the libraries. These new flags would introduce further nonsense, such as: --enable-library-for-ghci --disable-library-vanilla That will fail because --enable-library-for-ghci requires building the vanilla libraries. The current code processes the flags in isolation -- so detecting conflicts will be a moderate change to the existing code. But I think it is the right thing to do, anyone disagree? (2) Is there a better set of flags Perhaps my problem is that I am using the wrong abstraction for the flags. Is there a different set of flags that would solve my problem with out introducing incompatible combinations? (3) Another name for vanilla libraries I need a name to describe libraries that are built without any 'special' flags like -prof or -parallel. Currently I am using --enable/disable-library-vanilla, but I think there might be a better choice. Other ideas are 'default', 'plain', or 'standard'. Thanks! j.
