In the development of GHC we find it useful to have a version of system that guarantees not to use a shell to execute its commands (on Windows, where cmd.exe can only accept command lines up to 4Kb in length). I propose to add the code for this to System.Cmd, and call it rawSystem. There's a cbits module too, which I'd put in core/cbits/rawSystem.c. Does this sound plausible?
