building on Debian 3.0

The web site lists these two places to get Debian packages (.debs): ix86-Linux for Debian: http://people.debian.org/~bfulgham/nhc98 http://www-i2.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/Software/Haskell/debian/ --but neither link leads anywhere fruitful. So, I decide to build from nhc98src-1.14a.tar.gz on my Debian 3.0 ("Woody") machine, getting the following fatal error: sh /n/cs/nhc98-1.14a/targets/ix86-Linux/hmake3.config hmake-config: Warning: Config file not found: '/n/cs/nhc98-1.14a/lib/ix86-Linux/hmakerc' hmake-config: Starting new config from scratch. sh: /usr/bin/ghc-pkg-5.02.2: No such file or directory On my system, /usr/bin/ghc-pkg is a symlink to /etc/alternatives/ghc-pkg which is a symlink to /usr/lib/ghc-5.02.2/bin/ghc-pkg which is a symlink to ghc-pkg-5.02.2 (Yes, I do that many symlinks is stupid.) Please tell me the easiest way to get basic NHC installed.

Error when building nhc with cygwin and win2000

Hello! I've tried to install nhc98 on win2000 using Cygwin. However, I get an error message (see the last rows in the first text extract below). I have tested to compile with both GHC and GCC but I always get the same error message. (I run configure with: `$ configure' and `$ configure --buildwith=gcc') Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong / what the error is? I think that the heap profiling tools seem useful that's why I would like tor try nhc. You can then build the exact packages I provide to the main distribution, except using your library versions. This will insure no incompatibilities with your system setup, but will also put the package in conformance with the Debian set-up, so you don't have to worry about future upgrades, etc. Just do the following (after making sure you have installed the "dpkg-dev" package): bash# dpkg-source -x nhc98_1.14-8.dsc bash# cd nhc98-1.14 bash# dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -or- bash# sudo dpkg-buildpackage You may get some errors at this point complaining about some tools you may not have installed. Just get them from your Debian CD-ROM or elsewhere and continue the build. If it complains about Java, you can override with the "-d" command: dpkg-buildpackage -d And it will attempt to build without it. Just repeat this for the other packages you are interested in. I think this is a good approach, since the packages are known to build properly (because the autobuilders for other architectures have to use them), so this is probably the least-effort way to get a build for your system. The m68K architecture (pre-powerpc apple computers) won't build. bugfix for gcc-3.x

To any users of nhc98 who have reported faults when trying to build or use the compiler in conjuction with gcc-3.x. We have finally found the cause of the fault, and a fix. A source-code patch for nhc98-1.14 is attached, and is also available for download from the website. Technical details: It appears that gcc has changed the way it aligns statically declared arrays of pointers, from 4-byte boundaries in (gcc-2.x) to 32-byte boundaries (in gcc-3.x). Unfortunately, nhc98 was relying very heavily on the 4-byte alignment. As it turns out, the alignment can be restored to 4-byte boundaries without any ill effects, by using an "evil mangler"(TM) on the assembly code. Regards, Malcolm P.S. Compiling on SunOS 5.8 x86.

I am boot-strapping on SunOS 5.8, i386, nhc98 1.14a with no Haskell compiler available. The nhc98comp command yields a core on a signal 6 and 11. Before I investiage further, is nhc98 1.14a known to build for SunOS 5.8 x86 or are there any known problems with x86 or SunOS 5.8, 5.9? Thanks in advance, - Marcus -- Marcus D.
