statically compiled css

So I was thinking today about how far you can go with statically type checked web programs. Yesod uses Hamlet and web-routes, which allow you to statically type check your internal urls and html. What other parts of web applications can you type check? Well there are at least two other language domains that are commonly used in web applications, CSS and javascript. Javascript might be a bit hard for now, but CSS type checking might be possible within hamlet. Has this ever happened to you? you write an awesome css class that clears floats. called "AwesomeClearThing" Now it is time to use it in hamlet %p!class="AwesomClearThing" Recompile + Reload later...nothing has changed...Fail! what you need is: %p!@class|AwesomClearThing@ and now since it is type checked, the compiler will tell you something is up. This also has a prerequisite that yesod knows the css that is being used. Another interesting side note of this is that you could potentially figure out which classes and rules are unused and not put them in the compiled css file. There are other things, but I think type-checked class and id names would be a pretty awesome first step. What do you guys think?

ANNOUNCE: wai-handler-scgi 0.2.0

Hi all, I'd like to announce a (slightly experimental) release: wai-handler-scgi. SCGI is an alternative to CGI and FastCGI; like FastCGI, it allows you to have persistent processes. However, unlike FastCGI, it's a very simple protocol to implement. This package requires no external C libraries. SCGI is supported by most web servers that support FastCGI (Apache, Lighttpd, Nginx, Cherokee, I'm sure others), so this can be an alternate hosting method. My tests showed no problems with the package, but as this is the first release, you may not want to host production sites on it. There also plenty of room for optimizations, though my testing showed it to be competitive with FastCGI. I've also released new versions of wai-extra and wai-handler-fastcgi to provide a new feature: CGI sendfile support. Some servers allow you to specify an HTTP header (X-Sendfile, X-LIGHTTPD-send-file, etc) and then they will send the specified static file via a sendfile system call. This can have big performance advantages. The new function is called runSendfile, and is available in all three packages. The code for wai-handler-scgi is very short; I encourage anyone who has experience optimizing socket IO to have a look and fix up the performance bottlenecks. Cheers, Michael

wai-fastcgi

I've spent a bit of time trying to setup a yesod app under nginx using fastcgi. The server config looks a little like this (statics get served by nginx which is nice) server { listen 80; server_name domain.com; access_log # error_log # location ~ ^/s/.* { root /path/to/static/static; } location ~ ^/ { include /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params; fastcgi_pass http://127.0.0.1:3000; } } unfortunately I couldn't get the wai-handler-fastcgi package to run properly. Server: user error (FCGX_Accept failed with error code: -88) I couldn't find error code -88 easily and I am guessing that I need to set a particular port for the app to run on, unfortunately I didn't see any way to do this through the wai api? (it does appear the wai-handler-snap's run function takes an Int...) I'm just a little confused at the moment. Regards, Mark

Hamlet and functions that take multiple arguments

hamlet doesn't appear to support functions that take more than one argument. i.e. fun f x = [$hamlet| ^template.f.x^ |] produces the call template (f x) is there some way to make hamlet produce (template f) x?

Keep in mind that * I'm newish to Haskell * I'm not a professional web-dev, my day job is as a C++ programmer. DESIGN: I started with a mock-up of the two main pages in Inkscape first. I like the vector graphics stuff because you can play around with the sizes for icons without messing up the quality. The two main tabs are loaded with ajax and stored in a client session to make browser refresh work. Doing it this way causes quite a few headaches with the browser history and search engines though, so beware. DEVELOPMENT TIME: In all honesty it took me quite a while to get to the current point: If I had to make a rough guestimate I'd say about 5 days full-time plus another 3 weeks on-and-off in the evenings. That said, most of the time went into things that are completely unrelated to Haskell or Yesod. I've used Ruby on Rails in the past and I'd guess it probably took me roughly the same amount of time. I'm also pretty sure the second time around will be a great deal faster. THE HOST: I'm using an excellent shared host called bluehost.com with so-called "unlimited storage space" for quite cheap. Web Application Interface 0.2 ideas

I've put together a proposal for a new version of the wai package. Instead of posting a long e-mail here, the details are available on my blog[1]. I would appreciate feedback to try and make this package as widely accepted as possible. For those who don't know: the Web Application Interface is a standardized interface between web applications and web servers. It targets a very low level, not providing most parsing. It is meant to apply equally well to stand alone servers, FastCGI, CGI and anything else you can dream up. It also hopes to provide as little overhead as possible by making efficient API choices, especially enumerators and bytestrings.
