Hello, I don't know if anyone else feels the same way about sandboxing "user-code," but I think that sprinkling catch all over any code that calls XMonadContrib code is a complete abuse of the catch mechanism. In my opinion the only exceptions that xmonad should be trying to catch are those that are truly exceptional errors as thrown by, for example, X11. Ignoring bad contrib code errors and pretending like they don't exists seems completely counter to xmonad's goal of being solid, tested code. In summary, I feel that there is a difference between not having errors and ignoring them. Xmonad is still in active development and bad code should be as visible as possible. MATLAB and Xmonad

Hi guys, I switched to Xmonad recently, after looking into wmii and dwm, and I am quite happy with it :) However, I tried starting up MATLAB today and it displays a huge gray screen. I thought it crashed during startup but when I clicked on where the menu bar should be, the menus actually open and are displayed properly. But everything else just doesn't draw in the MATLAB window. Does anybody has an idea what the problem might be (and/or give me hints how to provide some more useful information)? It looks like it's a problem with Xmonad. I fired up an Xnest with fvwm and MATLAB works fine there. And Xnest with wmii and MATLAB works as well. Thanks in advance, Christian

darcs patch: Add Font layer supporting an Xft backend. Make Tabbed....

This darcs patch adds Xft support to XMonad. It consists of two parts: * a thin layer capturing FontStruct and XftFont in an Either type and providing a small set of functions to operate on this new XMonadFont type (implemented in XUtil.hs) * Change Tabbed.hs to be a user of this interface. You need to add the "X11-xft" package to your build-depends in xmonad.cabal (available as darcs repository from http://clemens.endorphin.org/X11-xft/) This is the initial support (but ready for every day use imho). textXMFExtents is not yet perfect, as it doesn't return a useful descent metric (resulting in slightly unaligned tab titles). I'm surely going to be annoyed by this in the next week and will post a follow up patch. But the more importent issues to be discussed are: * Is the Xft feature desired? * If yes, should we kick FontStruct in favour of XftFont? Xft is able to handle Core Fonts as well. Documentation needs to be fixed

Hi, I've just pushed a patch to fix XMC haddock compilation. At least now we can generate the docs again. I've just uploaded the newly generated docs here: http://gorgias.mine.nu/xmonad/ It would be great if each module maintainer could check and send the appropriate patches, since 0.4 is going to be release quite soon. Let's say you already have some pattern based hooks A and B and you want to add another hook that might need even when A or B or none matches? Sure, it's possible if you put the burden on the user, but that's exactly what I try to avoid.
