Automatic configuration

Hi, What about if some next xmonad release comes with an automatic configurator? It could work like that: xmonad-config --default xmonad-config --gnome xmonad-config --ubuntu-gnome xmonad-config --kde xmonad-config --arossato xmonad-config --dons xmonad-config --droundy xmonad-config --sjanssen etc. Such utility would just generate a xmonad.hs in the proper place that we could use as a template that is supposed to work without changes under different environments or supporting a list of features. Xmobar Plugin Development

I wrote a xmobar plugin to display the time as inexact text: http://www.wabdo.com/fred/FuzzyClock.hs It uses Data.Time, not the more widespread System.Time. It's not parameter-ised because it would be a huge pain to make a xmobar plugin take a function as an argument (seems like I'd have to take it as a string and eval it), and you're going to have to modify/recompile xmobar's source to add it anyway. I was surprised at just how un-idiomatic I found xmobar's configuration to be: * Uses format strings instead of functions * Uses property lists for the arguments to monitors instead of [(a,b)] or a data constructor * Commands aren't simple functions * 'Plugins' cannot be seperated from xmobar's source (and resulting binary) Currently the only way to extend xmobar's functionality without modifying/recompiling it is to use external processes. I think that having to hack/rebuild xmobar is a huge barrier to experimentation -- I could only find one other person who had published out-of-tree plugins (http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/xmonad/2008-April/005465.html) I think it should be possible to implement things like FuzzyClock in my configuration file without modifying xmobar at all! I should be able to use functions in my configuration file to do anything a Plugin can do now -- the output text should be composed of functions producing 'IO String'. I'll see if I can look into implementing it.) - new windows that happen to open on, say 'test' (for example, I'm testing a webapp in FF and it pops up a dialog), go to 'web'. Suboptimal... Most of the time, the application will just appear to hang. - it doesn't solve your original first question, which would be nice if we could solve it in a generic manner. I am not really good at Haskell, nor am I very experienced with XMonad (well, besides using it since 0.3 :-) ), but I think those are open issues currently, not addressed by *any* WM I know (not any tiling one at least. Left the windowing world some year or two ago, but they had the same problem). I think one can solve at least some of them. I'll let you know if I find out about something. BTW: If you like topicalised workspaces, be sure to look into Actions.DynamicWorkspaces, which lets you create and delete named workspaces dynamically, like in wmii (but better... it's XMonad!) Windows staying put on their workspace

Hi gang, I was wondering if it's possible to do the following things: 1) I'm finding that windows are popping up on my current workspace when they were generated by a window in a different workspace. These are very distracting. I'd like them to stay over there. 2) Right now, if I launch a big application (say, amarok or openoffice) on a workspace and change workspaces the window will pop up on the second workspace I am at now. Instead, I'd like to launch the application on it's own workspace, then go to a different workspace to do some work then come back after it's launched. Cheers! Jevin
