Persistant layouts

Greetings! This is my first post to this list so please forgive me if its not written in a more apprreally appropriate style. How would i go about configuring a persistant layout across all workspaces? Maby a better question would be, where in the documentation does it outline doing this? What i have in mind is a mrxvt terminal spanning the bottom of the screen, and all my other windows opening and tiling above it, basically looking like this.. ----------------------- | | | ...please excuse the naff ascii art. I know | screen 1 | screen 2 | persistant layours are possible with xmonad, | | | to be honest thats why im wanting to use it ----------------------- over the other tiling wm's iv tried. | | | terminal | ----------------------- Iv just started using xmonad as im really keen to learn haskell, so i know what im asking is possible and could very well be an easy task if i fiddled about, but as im just starting out im a little lost as to how to go about implementing it. Any and all thoughts and suggestions welcome, again sorry if this post does not fit with the netiquette of this list. Alex

Configure XMonad to work with the default Layout.SubLayouts config as given in the documentation. 1. Go to an empty workspace. 2. Launch gnome-terminal. 3. Launch gedit. (can be launched however you like; either from the terminal window, or using dmenu) 4. You should have two windows, with gedit in the master position and gnome-terminal on the right (in Tall layout) 5. Click File...Open. 6. Press ESC. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? I expect the focus to go back to gedit, but instead it goes to gnome-terminal. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? xmonad 0.9 A mix of Debian testing and unstable Linux localhost 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Jun 21 04:47:08 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux X.Org X Server 1.6.4 xmonad is installed in userspace, using cabal, NOT using the Debian packages. In fact, ghc itself is also installed in userspace. The Glorious Glasgow Haskell Compilation System, version 6.10.4 Are you using an xmonad.hs? darcs patch: sorting of entries in X.Prompt.DirExec

Hello, I've sent this patch some time ago: http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/xmonad/2009-October/008948.html but it wasn't applied/accepted. Maybe because it had content disposition set to 'inline' instead of 'attachment'? I'm reattaching the same patch again, now with (hopefully) proper disposition header... I think the way fullscreen works isn't correct. So far I've only been able to get rid of the red line around the window, but I still see the panel at the top. It's very annoying watching anything with the panel at the top. I need the panel so removing it isn't an option. -- This is in reference to the totem movie player, not the browser plugin gnome mplayer which works well with isFullscreen manageHook query. User had doFloat hook for the player. It is possible to instead doFullFloat the totem player to provide fullscreen without strut windows visible, however still the normal toggle commands don't work. Always full screening totem isn't an ideal solution, though, hence moving that report to this issue separate from the mplayer related Issue 333. I've not been able to find any references as to how totem attempts to request or implement fullscreen. Nor have I found any xmonad settings to support totem's fullscreen toggling. Closing this as won't fix for now. Prioritizing as low since other media players such as mplayer work well with xmonad. Help: How to disable font smoothing?

Hello everybody! I just moved from gnome to xmonad and think it's good. I prefer fonts not to be smoothed, so in gnome I use gnome-appearance-settings and set the smoothing option to 'none' (other options are 'gray scale' and 'subpixel'). How to configure those in xmonad? (By default, the fonts in firefox in xmonad are smoothed.), and how to set the background and text colors of applications in general? -- Sincerely, Yuliang Wang

xmonad and ghc 6.12

So, let's talk about plans for xmonad and ghc 6.12. I am currently building xmonad and xmonad-contrib on ghc 6.12.1rc2 and it works fine, except I get a lot of warnings, which fall into three main categories: * Warnings about using base-3 instead of base-4. Currently xmonad doesn't build with base-4 because of the Exception vs. OldException thing. What's our plan for dealing with this? We should switch to using the extensible exception stuff, but how do we continue to support base-3? (*Should* we continue to support it?) * Warnings about redundant imports; apparently 6.12 is more aggressive about noticing these. These can be cleaned up, which is probably a good idea anyway. Or, if people don't like this for some reason, we can disable this warning. * Lots of warnings about actions which return something other than () but whose results are neither bound nor explicitly discarded. As discussed on IRC the right thing to do here is probably to just pass -fno-warn-unused-do-bind to ghc (as opposed to "fixing" all of these). Thoughts? -Brent
