Xmonad trashed?

I'm on arch linux, 64 bit. I recently auto-upgraded a bunch of packages, and now even the simplest xmonad.hs file fails to compile. Given this xmonad.hs : import XMonad main = xmonad defaultConfig { modMask = mod4Mask , terminal = "lxterminal" -- more changes } I get the error: xmonad.hs:1:7: Could not find module Xmonad it is not a module in the current program or in any known package. Apparently the XMonad module is not in the current ghc path or something. It's been a while since I've used ghc so I'm not sure how to fix this.

Xmonad dies... where does it log?

If xmonad (on ubuntu) dies, does it leave any logging information anywhere? My ~/.xmonad/xmonad.errors file is empty (0 length), and /var/log/syslog doesn't seem to have anything that looks reasonable. Thanks -- Twitter: http://twitter.com/campbellmichael

startup programs

Hello everyone, After making the usual statement that I'm completely new to xmonad and I have no clue about haskell, I have loved xmonad and I have a question to find out if I can make more out of it: I'm using fedora linux with xmonad and i'm preparing for a music performance. I need at the concert to be able to startup my laptop and if possible to have everything up and running, without having to switch between desktops and run terminals & programs. This means that I don't only want to run some programs at startup (which could be done in the usual way for linux with a startup script - although I don't really know much about it) but I want the programs to be ran from terminals and be placed in the desktops in the way I would do manually after launching xmonad. Is this possible with xmonad? Any simple tutorials available on this? darcs patch: floating layout with placement

Hi Attached is a patch that introduces an XMonad.Layout.PlacedFloat module, similar to SimplestFloat but with windows automatically placed using a configurable policy. The patch also refactors X.H.Place and moves the placement algorithms to a new X.A.Place module, but all of this should be pretty much backwards-compatible except for the disappearance of purePlaceWindow. Layouts only receive unhandled events. State could be done by using an IORef. I also submitted a patch a while ago that adds arbitrary other state to XState that can be used by extension, to avoid this abuse of the layoutHook, which might be suitable for this. It's interesting, though I don't see how it's much better than wrapping the layoutHook with a faux layout modifier. In my mind, layouts already have a fine way to receive X events; it's actions that don't. However, for actions that need to receive events, both handleEventHook and layoutHook require (approximately equivalent) user configuration effort beyond simply binding the action. The faux layout modifier approach at least makes it easy for an action to maintain state; something that seems like it would be particularly difficult with handleEventHook. To relate this back to the bug report at hand, the types of compositing tricks that should be possible with xmonad today--those that use window contents but don't modify the way windows are usually rendered--seem like the realm of xmonad actions. Rank newbie here, so apologies if this isn't the right forum. I have just installed xmonad on an Ubuntu box using a keyboard with a "Windows" key. The basic problem is I can't get the modMask settings correct, so I am quite unable to manipulate xmonad. Here's what I have, and have done. I'm sure there is a simple fix for those more familiar with some of this, but it eludes me. * I've set my "modMask" to "mod4Mask". * xmodmap shows: > xmodmap xmodmap: up to 2 keys per modifier, (keycodes in parentheses): shift Shift_L (0x32), Shift_R (0x3e) lock Caps_Lock (0x42) control Control_L (0x25), Control_R (0x69) mod1 Alt_L (0x40), Meta_L (0xcd) mod2 Num_Lock (0x4d) mod3 mod4 Super_L (0xce), Hyper_L (0xcf) mod5 ISO_Level3_Shift (0x5c), Mode_switch (0xcb) Note that mod4 shows "Super_L", and that "0xce" is decimal 206.
