What do you see instead? Nothing happens. This doesn't occur with other WM (metacity). Are you using an xmonad.hs? Please attach it and the output of "xmonad --recompile". Hi Justin, Many thanks, I will apply it and recompile xmonad. In the mean-time, I wanted to share a short script that, combined with the Gnome Window Selector, works almost perfectly for me. You will find it attached. It uses xdotool to let you pop up the Gnome Window Selector from the keyboard. Perhaps someone will find it useful. Pros (compared to the different "pager/pager-like" solutions I have been trying out): + works with multiple screens + shows you the title of each window, not just an icon + works with a vertical panel Cons: - information is not right in front of you [you have to "pop up" the menu to see which window is where] - Gnome Window Switcher groups together all windows currently visible into the first section of the menu, and then omits the currently visible workspaces on which they sit from the ordered list of workspaces. I would have preferred an ordered list of *all* workspaces (together with some indication of which workspaces are currently visible), but I am finding it easy to get used to the way GWS works and this is just a minor inconvenience for me. Hi Justin and Max, Thank you for your terrific help. I just played around for a bit with the Gnome Window selector and it is by far the best option until now for my purposes. I will try to use xdotool to avoid having to click on the panel to show/hide the list. The only thing I would like to change about this is that I would like it to always show the complete, sorted list of workspaces -- "ws 1", "ws2" ,etc -- independently if there is something on them and/or if they are currently visible. The spatial layout of the ordered list (with no skipping of empty workspaces) would be perfect. But I guess this is asking too much. :) As usual all ideas are more than welcome. This is a terrific list. :) best ~l

Dear all, I never managed to have a way of knowing either 1- on which workspace a particular program is open or 2- which workspace is being displayed on each of my monitors (eg, "on this monitor you are looking at workspace 1") Is there a way to get either of these behaviors? Without this information, I do spend some serious time zapping across workspaces to find the window I need. I thought that an easy way to address (2) would be to use an OSD (like libnotify) to pop up a notification providing the workspace name/number when the user switches workspaces. Is there a "hook" in xmonad to which I could link a command "run notification saying this is workspace X"? Many thanks for any help ~lara

(I had such a thing working in either Beryl or Compiz at one point.) What I've been using when I need to remember where I left a specific app (or want a quick review of all of the applications I am running) is Gnome's Application/Task switcher menu (not the bar, but the menu). You can set the menu to list all of your workspaces, rather than just the current one. The menu shows, grouped under each workspace name, an icon and title for every application. With the Gnome manageHook properly configured in your xmonad.hs you can click on an application on the menu and jump to the appropriate workspace. Finally, it also helps to have strong keyboard bindings for workspace switching. If you don't have them already, you probably want good "next workspace" and "previous workspace" key bindings (in the "cycle workspace" module). Dear all, Thank you for your amazing replies. Until now I have managed to get XMonad.Layout.ShowWName running and it is already great help. What I would like, though, would be to make that small indication of what the current workspace is called *permanent* -- by having it sit, eg, in a corner of each of my screens. Looking at the source [http://xmonad.org/xmonad-docs/xmonad-contrib/src/XMonad-Layout-ShowWName.ht…] I understand that I can change the x and y arithmetic to position the small window displaying the workspace name in a corner of my screen. What I don't know how to do is: - to disable the "timer", so that it doesn't fade out; I guess it has to be done in the last two statements of that function? - how to recompile XMonad.Layout.ShowWName so that this "custom" version runs rather than the one included in xmonad-contrib on my ubuntu system. Any guidance on how to pull this off would be amazing. : ) Many thanks, best, ~lara

modal window gets placed on unplugged monitor, makes system unusable

Hello, I can always reproduce this behavior. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and was going to post this as a bug report on gnome-keyring, but now suspect I can probably work around this within xmonad. In short: when using a laptop that will only at times be connected to an external monitor but also used "by itself", is there a way to make sure that a modal window will always get placed in a currently visible part of my desktop area? My problem is that when I boot my laptop by itself, a modal window that grabs all input focus (gnome-keyring's "please insert passphrase", which often pops up on Ubuntu systems if there is a known, encrypted wifi network within range) is getting placed in my external monitor which... is not plugged to the computer at all. The result is that no elements of the Gnome UI work at all: neither the menus on the panel nor (Gnome) keyboard shortcuts to launch apps do anything, which makes the system unusable. More generally (ie, besides a solution to this particular problem with gnome-keyring), is there a way for me to make sure xmonad will not place windows on parts of my screen that are inaccessible when my laptop is by itself? I think I have been experiencing a similar difficulty with Skype, where it would start but I couldn't see it. I thought: Skype crashed again, let me delete its config. That worked, but now I think it might have worked because Skype (by remembering its previous window position) was asking xmonad to place it on the external screen which was not (at that time) connected to the computer and thus its window stayed invisible for me (though skype was running). Not sure this made any sense, I tried my best. : ) Many thanks for any help and best! ~l

runOrRaiseNext lost functionality in xmonad 0.9?

I used to have the following line in my xmonad.hs to bind Win+F to either open a new firefox or switch to an existing one in a way that would work across multiple Ubuntu versions: ((modMask, xK_f), runOrRaiseNext "firefox-3.5 || firefox3 || firefox" (className =? "Firefox" <||> className =? "Shiretoko")) The ||'s would be interpreted by the shell, first trying firefox-3.5, then if it didn't work firefox3, etc. This worked great. But upgrading to xmonad 0.9.1-2 (installed Lucid Lynx) this functionality broke. Now nothing happens when I press Win+F, and I receive no errors. If I just put "firefox" then it works, but "firefox || firefox" does not, leading me to believe the command is no longer executed through the shell. Is this intentional? If it is, is there a way that xmonad provides for me to query what's in $PATH so I can bind the right version of firefox?

Today I tried using SeamlessRDP, but xmonad just went crazy with those windows from the WinXP vm. Is there any chance to get that working? Did anyone try to use SeamlessRDP with xmonad yet? Cheers, Thomas
