Using conky as the main status bar -- possible?

Hello, Story cut short: I'd like to save a few pixels and get rid of xmobar, and use conky for various tasks. Is this possible such that I can use dynamicLogWithPP and redirect relevat stuff to conky? There would be some issues ahead: for instance, how conky handles stdin. I googled and googled and nothing came up; most of the users like to use conky to output information to dzen. Conky with Lua works well if I help it a little with Haskell in xmonad.hs :) Thanks for answers, -- Mikael

multi-head bindings

I have two monitors, left and right, and workspaces 1-6. I'd like to configure xmonad so that when I go to workspace 1, I see workspace 1 on the left, focused, and workspace 2 on the right. When I go to workspace 2, I'd like to see workspace 1 on the left, and workspace 2 on the right, focused. When I go to workspace 3, I'd like to see workspace 3 on the left, focused, and workspace 4 on the right. And so on. How can I do it? Thank you.

Weird behavior in Combo[P] and IM to do with "master"

I mention these both in the same query because I think this behavior has to do with the way each of them handles master windows, and the concept of "master" in XMonad is something I don't understand very well. The two layouts in particular are: > magnifier = Mag.magnifiercz' 1.3 > magnifier $ named "Split" $ > combineTwoP (TwoPane (3%100) (2%3)) > (noBorders simpleTabbedBottom) > (limitWindows 3 $ Column 1) > (ClassName "Iceweasel") and > (magnifier $ gridIM (1%5) (Role "buddy_list")) With the IM layout, it appears that any new window becomes the master, which is not the desired behavior; the buddy list should stay master, if I understand correctly. The problem with the combineTwoP layout is that one of the iceweasel instances on the left side of the screen is a master window, leading to the undesired behavior of the other one magnifying. Additionally, is it possible to have no master windows (e.g. in a grid layout)? Thank you very much. -- Alex R

Tabbed layout...

A quick google search did not yield any examples or explanations of how to use XMonad.Layout.Tabbed. I may have missed it, though, as I am tired. My current config can be found at: http://pastebin.com/uu6RjWbE I have a rudimentary dzen, I love the magnifier, and the scratchpad could come in handy. Thoughts on the floating layer

Hi there! I would like to discuss some ideas which I have been tossing around regarding the floating layer. In Bluetile I discourage the use of the floating layer and hope that people use the stacking layout instead, because I feel that the floating layer is fairly confusing to novice users. It feels pretty alien and managing windows that are currently floating is somewhat cumbersome (like how to bring one floating window in front of another). But unfortunately I can't get by completely without it in Bluetile, because things like dialog windows need to float even in a tiled layout. So I'm thinking about how the floating layer can be improved. Looking at the implementation, I feel that the floating layer is a little bit 'bolted on'. So my proposal: how about changing the core so that it allows to specify a _layout_ for managing floating windows? At the same time, floating windows could be integrated properly into the StackSet data structure. Each workspace should have two stacks associated with them: one that contains the windows in the tiled layer and the other stack contains the windows in the floating layer. Obviously few of the current layouts make sense for managing a floating layer. X.L.PositionStoreFloat might be a possible choice, but one would probably write a standard one based on what Xmonad core is currently doing in regards to floating windows. Having floating windows managed by a layout would remove their 'special status' and would allow for more customization: For example the possibility of adding decorations to floating windows as well. Issue 403 in xmonad: DynamicLog encodes output twice

Using dynamicLog with ghc 6.12 leads to output that is encoded as UTF-8 twice and thus anything but ASCII is unreadable. A dirty hack is using ppOutput = putStrLn . decodeString. Removing encodeSring (with darcs, it seems to be encodeOutput with 0.9.1) from dynamicLogString in DynamicLog.hs fixes the problem. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? xmonad-contrib-0.9.1 or latest darcs, ghc-6.12.3, Gentoo with haskell overlay.

dzen example request

I'm just starting to use Xmonad. I've looked at some example configs, but I haven't been able to understand much. I'm trying to figure out how to put a dzen bar at the bottom of my screen with a date and battery indicator. My config file is here: http://pastebin.com/1uucAxvH Other questions I have: Assuming I have a separate chat workspace, could I have dzen flash that workspace when one of the windows wants attention? Or more generally, can have dzen or xmonad signal me when a window wants attention? Any advice in general for pidgin? Any advice in general for anything? I'm new to this, and it seems daunting, but I want to give it a chance. Thank you for any advice you have. -- Alex R

Spawn all new windows into slave pane?

I was wondering if it was possible to set xmonad.hs to spawn all new windows as slaves, the current behaviour I have, where the new window replaces the currently focused one, really disrupts my workflow (like the commas in this sentence). I went into my ~/.conkyrc and found out that commenting out "own_window yes" will solve the problem.
