Throwing exceptions from a xmonad-contrib module

Hi all, A beginner XMonad hacker question: on reading the sources for the CycleSelectedLayouts extension I found one thing to be slightly weird. Check the following snippet: cycleToNext :: (Eq a) => [a] -> a -> Maybe a cycleToNext lst a = do -- not beautiful but simple and readable ind <- findIndex (a==) lst return $ lst !! if ind == length lst - 1 then 0 else ind+1 -- | If the current layout is in the list, cycle to the next layout. Otherwise, -- apply the first layout from list. cycleThroughLayouts :: [String] -> X () cycleThroughLayouts lst = do winset <- gets windowset let ld = description . S.layout . S.workspace . S.current $ winset let newld = fromMaybe (head lst) (cycleToNext lst ld) sendMessage $ JumpToLayout newld If you apply cycleThroughLayouts on an empty list, it will try to take the list's head. That doesn't crash xmonad, though, because the exception is swallowed by sendMessage. Would throwing an exception "needlessly" like that just because it will be caught later on count as a bug or is it something not worth bothering about? Daniel

(not xmonad) Easy shift / ctrl / AltGR ... hack

Hi. I wrote a hack which provides for example "space/shift dual role key". When you press the space key alone, it's a space; but when you press it with another key, it's a shift. Any pairs of keys are possible. This means your hands stay almost always at their home postion. Keyboard oriented people may gain much from it. In my case, it lets me press Alt, Ctrl, and Shift with my thumbs. Now I can't type comfortably without it. It's a fork of Xorg "evdev" driver (= xf86-input-evdev). For download and the details, visit the homepage[1]. Both tarball and git access are provided. Resize floating scratchpad with keyboard

Hi, i am using scratchpad as drop-down terminal together with screen. The scratchpad window is configured to take 35% of the window height. How can i increase and decrease the scratchpad height without using the mouse? Kind regards Chris

Wallpaper Appearing Briefly on Client Creation/Destruction in Tiled Layouts

Hi, I noticed that my wallpaper (or the root window if there is none) is appearing briefly (i.e. flashing) during client creation / destruction in tiled layouts. This jerky effect is not happening in Fullscreen layout. Is there a workaround to this? Regards,

Help with Actions.Search

These are my two attempts at getting Actions.Search to work: http://sprunge.us/TYfX http://sprunge.us/MXGH The first paste is with just Haskell code, and the second is with what looks like syntactic sugar via the EZConfig module. I'm new I'm new to Haskell and Xmonad, and I'm unsure where to put the searchEngineMap method (constructor function?) lines in the first paste. I'm unsure where to put the searchList type declaration and list in the second. I'm lost. Help is appreciated. -- Desai

xmonad for the Haskell unwashed?

Hi; I'm contemplating a tiling WM, and am drawn to xmonad because its customisation language is its implementation language; I'm long accustomed to this in e.g. EMACS, so I feel it'd be a good fit. But a friend, who's otherwise an outspoken Haskell advocate, put xmonad down in favor of awesome for reasons I'll summarize as 'dependency hell'. I'm interested in the perspective of the xmonad clan on this: If I pick up xmonad simply because I want a hackable WM, how much Haskell janitorial work will I be taking on? Is there a straightfoward and broadly accepted base of package repositories? Are the participants in the module ecosystem pretty careful not to break stuff? Do current versions of various xmonad packages all depend on the current versions of their dependencies? - Allen S. Rout
