I tried it out but it didn't fix the issue I encountered. Problem with custom layout

Hi all, I have been trying to build a custom layout for my small-screen netbook. The layout consists of a master area which contains one window and (if there is more than one window) a slave area in which all other windows are tabbed. My xmonad.hs is here: http://hpaste.org/53712 The magic comes from this line in myLayoutHook: addTabsAlways shrinkText myTabConfig (mastered 0.05 0.5 Simplest) which relies on XMonad.Layout.Master, XMonad.Layout.Simplest and XMonad.Layout.Tabbed. The problem for me is that when I have, say, 3 windows open, and window #3 (the second window in the tabbed slave area) is focused, if I switch to window #1 (the master window), then window #2 (the first window in the tabbed slave area) is raised (though not focused) so that I can no longer see window #3. The behaviour I would like is for window #3 to remain visible when I switch to the master window and, more generally, for whatever slave window has been visible to remain visible when I switch to the master area. I have tried another two-paned layout without being able to eliminate the problematic behaviour. Does anyone know 1) another way to implement the layout I am looking for with the behaviour I want or 2) a way to produce the behaviour I desire with my existing custom layout? Phil

XMonad-contrib installation problem

Hi, On my Ubuntu 11.10, I installed xmonad using 'cabal install xmonad' However 'cabal install xmonad-contrib' failed with the errors shown below. I have also listed the output from 'ghc-pkg list'. That's what I do. Except I only use ^X-5-f and ^X-5-r. I don't get confused, because I (almost) never switch buffers within a frame. Instead, I move the frames around using xmonad. Each frame is a buffer. I use the 3-column layout in xmonad. So I always have 3-5 emacs frames on each of the windows, with some frames double-height and some regular height. (My screen is pretty big.) I organize them so that I can see all of the buffers I am working at once in the same window. I use xmonad keys to move the focus around, to move the frames around within a window, to change between regular and double-height, and to move them between windows. I can also mix in other kinds of windows when needed, like a PDF viewer or a browser pane. With this set up and 4 xmonad windows, I can work efficiently with up to 20 emacs buffers. darcs patch: Expose X.L.Groups.Helpers and Groups.Wmii in xmonad-co...

I think what happened here is the author split X.L.Groups.Examples into Examples, Helpers, and Wmii, but failed to update xmonad-contrib.cabal. X.L.Groups was edited to refer to and link to all three modules, plus they provide useful functionality. So Helpers and Wmii should be exposed along with Examples. 1 patch for repository /home/gvg/repos/pure/XMonadContrib: Thu Nov 3 23:37:03 MDT 2011 Wirt Wolff <wirtwolff(a)gmail.com> * Expose X.L.Groups.Helpers and Groups.Wmii in xmonad-contrib.cabal They provide many useful exports and are linked from X.L.Groups so promote them from other-modules or missing status.

I apparently have unusual usage patterns when it comes to multiple monitors, and it's causing problems for xmonad (and other WMs too, but Xmonad is the one I care about..). I frequently change the arrangement, orientation, and number of monitors on my system (it's a laptop that I dock 5-6x/day, and I alternate between sitting/standing at my desk, and I also just like rotating an external 19" lcd depending on the task at hand.). The problem I have is that I haven't found any status-bar like programs (eg: xmobar, taffybar) that will keep up with the screen adjustments I do. (gnome-panel worked, but it's apparently being phased out, and I'm not particularly happy with gnome dependencies anyway.) I usually end up with a status bar that's offset into the middle of the screen after a rotation / addition (taffybar) or, with xmobar, the bar eventually disappears entirely. I think I can probably fix things by tweaking taffybar/xmobar to respond to resize commands from xmonad, but I don't know how to detect the screen geometry changes within my xmonad source. This looks like the right module to start with: http://xmonad.org/xmonad-docs/X11/Graphics-X11-Xlib-Extras.html#t%3AEvent but I haven't been enlightened by any of the Event values, and I don't know enough to tell if there are event types missing (eg: XRRScreenChangeNotify, maybe?) or if I just don't know how to interpret the xmonad module/types. darcs patch: Small bugfix to X.L.Fullscreen

When using xmonad on another machine, the XMonad.Layout.Fullscreen module stopped refreshing the layout when a window entered fullscreen. This patch makes the layout modifiers return a Just instead of a Nothing on the FullscreenChanged message, fixing the bug. I do wonder, however, why the modifiers worked fine before. The patch also fixes some funny whitespace. -- Audun Skaugen

Bluetile?

There is blogfoo from Dec '09 suggesting that bluetile is going to be in stock xmonad Real Soon Now. Is it Now, now? http://xmonad.org/xmonad-docs/xmonad-contrib/index.html still doesn't have anything matching bluetile, which is making me presume 'no'. - Allen S. Rout
