X () with side effects

Hello, I am trying to write a function which has side-effects, e.g. call spawn. foo :: X () foo = do io $ spawn "myprogram" doSomethingElseOrReturn foo -- recursion However, if I call foo from a keybinding ((modMask, xK_x), foo) the spawned program will run but not mapped. This means that I can see the console output in xmonad stdout/stderr but the window will not pop up. I think this is because of the internal handling of keyevents in xmonads main. Is there a way I could bypass this and have my windows mapped as soon as I call the program with spawn? I hope this is clear enough.. if not, I'll come back with the actual code I have written. It's some kind of of vi-mode behaviour for xmonad. Pure X actions (like focusing up/down) work without problems but spawning doesn't. Many thanks and best regards, Jochen

How to extend layout modifier by visibility of status bar ?

Hi, I'm trying to extend XMonad.Layout.NoBorders.lessBorders modifier function. Startup notification

I was looking at Issue 359 ( http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=359) and using start-up notification was proposed. This seems like a powerful possibility, for example OpenBox uses it for all kinds of stuff ( http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Upgrading_to_3.4#Improved_startup_notification ). I've looked in their code and they use http://cgit.freedesktop.org/startup-notification/. Do you think Haskell bindings would be useful since I would be interested in implementing this as a project? Also, I am not sure if anyone is working on something similar. Best regards, Willem Van Lint

Policy on haskell version

Hi, I was wondering what haskell version we should keep in mind when programming? For example, the language pragma PatternGuards is still used in the code although pattern guards are included in the Haskell 2010 standard. Do I need to strive for backwards compatibility and in how far can we use recent language extensions? Best regards, Willem Van Lint

It would be good if XMC had clean code. (Hlint strives for 'correctness'; none of the changes ought to affect the semantics of the code.) XMonad-core generates roughly 31 suggestions and XMC roughly 468. Even excluding debatable suggestions like eta-reduction, this is a lot of small bad things. Fortunately, they are all generally very easy to fix and understand why the code was flagged, making this a good beginner project. Attached are the 2 HTML reports hlint generates (obviously 31+468 messages is a bit much to paste in). There is compiz branch without window manager at http://git.compiz.org/~tuxmarkv/zcomp/ that can be used with XMonad. That is a good idea but for some reason I can't see any kind of progress since 2010. The compiz project is completely modular except for the window manager part. Said that, I don't know if compiz or projects like that are the solution.

xmonad problem or application stealing keys?

If I start the application with command line parameters that will make it try to get fullscreen mode, then: - the current layout of the workspace is ignored, and the xpdf window indeed fill the whole workspace. - the keys for cycling through windows in the current workspace are ignored. (keys for switching to another workspace still works). The first behaviour is not really a problem, but the second is ennoying. It makes fullscreen-mode usable only with one window per workspace. examples of problematic apps/parameters xpdf -fullscreen rdesktop -f Other applications, like mplayer and zathura, does the right thing, they honor the size of the window that the windowmanager gives them AND they are willing to be cycled into smaller windows. Caps lock, togeter with ledmod in xmobar

Hi, I am in the progress of configurating xmobar togheter with Xmonad and so far it is going really good thanks to the help from xmonad web resources. I am using Archlinux. But now I am stuck. I have added Keyboard LED Indication, following [url= http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Xmonad/Config_archive/John_Goerzen%27s_C…<http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Xmonad/Config_archive/John_Goerzen%27s_C…> Goerzen's[/url] excelent guide. Installed "ledmon" from AUR and added in xmonad.hs [code] , Run CommandReader "/usr/bin/ledmon" "LED" , template = "%StdinReader% }{ <fc=#ffff00>%LED%</fc> %cpu% | %memory% * %swap% <fc=#ee9a00>%date%</fc> | %EGPF%" } [/code] Keyboard LED indication works great. The problem is that I from time to time want to enter Swedish caracters and for the reason switch to se keymap. I did that according to Archlinux wiki about X. in /etc/X11/xorg.conf i added. [code] Option "XkbLayout" "us, se" Option "XkbOptions" "grp:caps_toggle" [/code] I can now easily toggle keyboard layout using caps lock. However I do not get a indication in xmobar that caps lock is on. That would be great to se. Any idea on how to accomplies this? Thank you. Best regards, /Christer

Ledmon do not show status in xmobar, maped caps lock
