Visual hints for XMonad actions
by Mario Pastorelli 27 Dec '12

27 Dec '12

Hi XMonad users, I'm playing a little bit with XMonad and its primitives to see how the core works. One idea is to create a set of visible hints that the user can display when an action is taken. For example, when the user changes the workspace to the previous workspace, then a left arrow appears in the centre of the screen. Those hints are very similar to what happen on other WMs and personally very useful. With this idea in mind I started to think about requirements: they should be always visible (on top of the stack) such that the user can see them but they should be not-intrusive so that they don't disturb the work of the user. They should be removed automatically after sometime. One last thing, I would like to stick to the XMonad color configuration. I started with the left arrow. I get the code idea from XMonad.Actions.GridSelect because it shows a grid of windows or workspace using XMonad draw primitives. I created the code below which draws a left arrow in the centre of the screen and set it in my configuration such that when I move the the prev workspace, the arrow is showed and then deleted (using ((modMask, xK_Left ), drawArrow xpConfig 10 (Arrow 200 200) >> prevWS) as configuration in XMonad.hs). Before I show the code, let me say that the code (almost) works and let me make my questions: 1) is the code correct or I'm doing it in a wrong way? 2) how to put the window on top of the stack such that it is always visible. For now, for some reason the arrow is not visible when the layout is MouseResizableTile (the window is under all the not-floating windows) but it is visible with ThreeCol and Full. That's a mistery for me and I can't make any progress on that 3) how to ignore the input such that it pass trough the created window 4) the way that I use to kill the window using thread is correct? Can I do something better? 5) an open question: is there any way to use composite such that the windows can be transparent? I don't think XMonad supports composite, that's why it's an open question, but I really would like to add it and obtain some of the effects available in WM like Compiz. It's more general than what I want to do, I really would like to see the transition between screens as in compiz. Thank you, Mario data Arrow = Arrow { head_w :: Integer, head_h :: Integer } drawArrow :: XPConfig -> Integer -> Arrow -> X () drawArrow conf span (Arrow { head_w = head_w, head_h = head_h }) = gets (screenRect . W.screenDetail . W.current . windowset) >>= \s -> let half_w = div head_w 2 half_h = div head_h 2 cx = div (fromIntegral $ rect_width s) 2 cy = div (fromIntegral $ rect_height s) 2 x0 = fromIntegral $ cx - half_w - span y0 = fromIntegral $ cy - half_h - span p1 = Point (fromIntegral span) (fromIntegral $ half_h) p2 = Point (fromIntegral head_w) (fromIntegral span) p3 = Point (fromIntegral head_w) (fromIntegral head_h) in withDisplay $ \dpy -> do let dflt = defaultScreen dpy let scr = defaultScreenOfDisplay dpy rootw <- asks theRoot win <- liftIO $ mkUnmanagedWindow dpy scr rootw x0 y0 (fromInteger $ head_w + span) (fromInteger $ head_h + span) liftIO $ mapWindow dpy win gc <- liftIO $ createGC dpy win bordergc <- liftIO $ createGC dpy win liftIO $ do Just fgcolor <- initColor dpy $ fgColor conf Just bgcolor <- initColor dpy $ bgColor conf Just bordercolor <- initColor dpy $ borderColor conf setForeground dpy gc bgcolor setBackground dpy gc bgcolor fillRectangle dpy win gc 0 0 (fromIntegral $ head_w + span) (fromIntegral $ head_h + span) setForeground dpy gc fgcolor setBackground dpy gc bgcolor setForeground dpy bordergc bordercolor fillPolygon dpy win gc [p1,p2,p3] convex coordModeOrigin freeGC dpy gc freeGC dpy bordergc -- kill the window forkIO $ do threadDelay(1 * 1000000) unmapWindow dpy win destroyWindow dpy win sync dpy False return ()

Controlling Tab Style with Monad.Layout.SubLayouts
by Eyal Erez 26 Dec '12

26 Dec '12

Hi, I'm using Monad.Layout.SubLayouts to combine multiple windows using a tabbed layout. This is working great. However, the tab that is created is kind of large. Is there some way to control this? Thank you, -- There are 10 types of people, those who know binary and those who don't.

Issue 507 in xmonad: Pattern match failure in do expression at XMonad/Prompt.hs:601:3-14

Status: New Owner: ---- New issue 507 by smp...@gmail.com: Pattern match failure in do expression at XMonad/Prompt.hs:601:3-14 http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=507 **What steps will reproduce the problem?** I'm not sure that I can exactly describe how I get it. Generally speaking, it's `shellPrompt' call and fast `t' pressing. Than I get xmonad totally freezed and message in terminal where I call `xinit', which run xmonad: Pattern match failure in do expression at XMonad/Prompt.hs:601:3-14 At 601 line of Prompt.hs there is unsafe pattern matching: Just bgcolor <- io $ initColor d (bgColor c) Just border <- io $ initColor d (borderColor c) **What is the expected output? What do you see instead?** What I want is some `fromJust' there or hadling this situation with `case'. It's xmonad-contrib-0.10-r1 build from gentoo-haskell overlay. Working on bind to change brightness/temp. Any suggestions?
by Ian Kelling 19 Dec '12

19 Dec '12

I'm working on setting up a binding to set brightness/color temperature in a way similar to the program redshift does with randr. http://jonls.dk/redshift/ I'm just wondering if anyone has done anything similar or has any tips for me. Just a first look, I see redshift calling xcb_randr_set_crtc_gamma from #include <xcb/randr.h>, and I'm wondering how to do the equivalent in xmonad. I'm not familiar with xmonad sources, gonna start looking around there next. The specific behaviour I'm thinking of is to toggle a lowered brightness/temp for the current active window's monitor (and subsequently, whichever monitor that window is displayed in, or no monitor if it is not being displayed). Thanks, Ian Kelling

Issue 360 in xmonad: shellPromptHere from XMonad.Actions.SpawnOn freezes upon files with Chinese names
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 16 Dec '12

16 Dec '12

Status: New Owner: ---- New issue 360 by wei.hoo: shellPromptHere from XMonad.Actions.SpawnOn freezes upon files with Chinese names http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=360 What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Bind a key combination to shellPromptHere 2. mkdir /tmp/new; cd /tmp/new 3. touch 1; touch 测试 4. Invoke shellPromptHere, type in "emacs /tmp/new/", press TAB What is the expected output? What do you see instead? Observe that the shell prompt window freezes. No keybindings are accepted, such as C-a, C-e, C-g. However, XMonad keybindings are still effective. At this point we have to press M-q to restart XMonad. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? xmonad-darcs and xmona-contrib-darcs on Arch Linux. GHC-6.12. Are you using an xmonad.hs? Please attach it and the output of "xmonad --recompile". Please provide any additional information below. If we remove /tmp/new/1 and only keep /tmp/new/测试, typing "emacs /tmp/new/ [TAB]" doesn't freeze the shell prompt. The Chinese-named file isn't shown in the completion, but we can still press C-g to cancel the shell prompt. The font I'm using does support Chinese. PS: I kind of remember this wasn't a problem with ghc-6.10, but I'm not sure. Issue 509 in xmonad: Sometimes cannot switch focus using keyboard shortcuts
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 09 Dec '12

09 Dec '12

Status: New Owner: ---- New issue 509 by dcl...@gmail.com: Sometimes cannot switch focus using keyboard shortcuts http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=509 What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Launch terminal 2. Launch another program using Mod-S-p 3. Try to switch window focus using M-S-j What is the expected output? What do you see instead? Window should switch focus. Window does not switch focus. Need to use mouse to regain control of focus. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? xmonad 0.10. Ubuntu Precise. Are you using an xmonad.hs? Please attach it and the output of "xmonad --recompile". No output of xmonad --recompile. File is attached. Please provide any additional information below. The problem seems to happen intermittently and cannot always be reproduced. Attachments: xmonad.hs 3.3 KB

Re: Issue 177 in xmonad: xmonad does not follow ICCCM and ignores WM_TAKE_FOCUS protocol

Comment #24 on issue 177 by vogt.adam: xmonad does not follow ICCCM and ignores WM_TAKE_FOCUS protocol http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=177 Geoff Reedy's last patch doesn't apply cleanly against latest darcs (due to the merging of extensible state stuff). Attached is a patch bundle including the old ones that probably works as the old one did. Issue 521 in xmonad: Monitor from Layout.Monitor does not disappear
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 04 Dec '12

04 Dec '12

Status: New Owner: ---- New issue 521 by andrew.s...@tiscali.co.uk: Monitor from Layout.Monitor does not disappear http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=521 What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Add Layout.Monitor to xmonad.hs, including key binding to toggle monitor 2. (Re)start xmonad - monitor is hidden as expected 3. Press S-u - monitor appears as expected 4. Press S-u again - nothing happens What is the expected output? What do you see instead? Pressing key for second time should hide monitor What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? xmonad 0.10 on Arch linux Are you using an xmonad.hs? Please attach it and the output of "xmonad --recompile". Please provide any additional information below. As far as I can see, this is a manifestation of issue 344. So explicitly, what I think is happening is: 1. manageMonitor handles the monitor using either doIgnore or doHideIgnore, and so ... 2. the monitor is never added to the stackset 3. redoLayout in Layout.Monitor tries to hide monitor with "hide" 4. "hide" (in XMonad.Operations) checks if window appears in "mapped" before actually hiding window but it was never added Attachments: xmonad.hs 9.9 KB
