Anything can be abused. Between topic branches and rebasing, it's fairly effective. While it's unfortunate that whitespace problems aren't pointed out, whitespace differences are (and are represented much more intuitively than most diff formats), so it's pretty clear when you've introduced a whitespace problem. Here's a concrete example of the benefits of some degree of centralization: Today, I tried to rebuild all of my favorite Haskell projects using GHC 7.6. Whenever I ran into errors while cabal-installing, I'd immediately google "github haskell $PKG", hope that one was there, and take a look at the recent commits, pull requests, and what forks exist. For example: https://github.com/haskell/cabal/pull/1003 https://github.com/haskell-pkg-janitors/X11/pull/9 https://github.com/haskell/HTTP/pull/27 Now that I'm looking to do the same with XMonad, I get more errors (XMonad/Core.hs:34:25: Module `Prelude' does not export `catch'), but I have no way to tell if anyone else has already fixed these things. Minor stuff, sure, but I imagine someone's already done it, and it'd be convenient to just clone their repository. Of course, nothing is fundamentally different from the darcs situation - someone could have sent out an email that would achieve the same. But the point is, they don't, because the barrier to entry is too high. Github lowers this barrier, encouraging more speculative commits, providing a way of finding out what people are working on. If anything, github promotes a healthier decentralized community, because the forks are centrally tracked, more discoverable. Can I switch layouts based on number of windows in a workspace?

I'd like to have a different layout depending on how many windows are visible. Something like: one? --> Full under four? --> Tall otherwise --> Grid I couldn't find an existing function, and didn't make much headway writing my own either. (I tried to use sendMessage $ JumpToLayout "Full" etc. in a managehook) Is there an obvious way to do this? Thanks Jeff

State of my xmonad config

With Carlos prompt launcher patch applied there's just two issues which prevent me from being ecstatic about xmonad as a replacement for dwm. First of all, it's great to not use dwm but the Prompt module. It works well even quicker although I believe there's no cache in use as in dmenu_run. Second it's superb to have capable replacement for dmenu_run. Here's the outstanding issues I need to look at and find solutions for. Some of them have already gotten suggestions on the list but I didn't yet manage to tackle them. 1) MPlayer window moving to right and down slightly when returning from fullscreen. This seemed to move in bigger steps if the window is larger. 2) Emulate dwm's Mod-0 view for seeing all windows in the 0 tag to get an overview just before I exit xmonad for making sure there's no open window I forgot about which might need interaction. Xdmx as a solution to the multiple graphics cards, > 2 monitor problem

As many of you may or may not know, X11 is terrible at handling more than 2 monitors. If you have 2 different graphics cards with 2 monitors each, they have to be separate X11 instances which means you can't share windows between all screens. Yuck. I have a GTX 480 & a GS 4800 and I can make local X11 servers run on both of them. Is it possible to have Xdmx connect to two or 3 local instances of X11? If so, then, I can have a triple display! I ask this here Xdmx lacks a mailing list.

(The case where no windows are visible is vacuous since layouts are irrelevant.) Rough usage: import XMonad.Layout.OnlyFor, then use as a layout modifier myLayouts = OnlyFor Multiple (Spacing 3) $ Tall ||| Mirror Tall ||| Full gives you a Spacing 3 modifier unless there is only one window visible. This has been sitting around in my local tree for about a year, after I wrote it for someone on #xmonad; it has vanished from hpaste since then and I never got around to submitting it to -contrib.

Patch: add ewmhDesktopsEventHookCustom to XMonad.Hooks.EwmhDesktops.hs to sort workspaces

Hello, I have attached a patch to add a generalized version of ewmhDesktopsEventHook called ewmhDesktopsEventHookCustom that works as ewmhDesktopsLogHookCustom for ewmhDesktopsLogHook: it let you pass a function that will be applied to the workspace list. The reason of this patch is that if you use ewmhDesktopsLogHook with a special sort function then an external workspace viewer will show the workspaces in custom order. But if you interact with them, then the interaction will work on the normal order. So if you use a sort function on the LogHook then you need the same sort function in the EventHook. For example, before this patch I had problems with the workspace viewer of the gnome panel. A keybinding to (0, xK_plus) doesn't work What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
