gnome theming is destroying my life

I probably updated my Ubuntu 12.04 install too enthusiastically, and suddenly I have a lot of horrible theming. In particular, menu bars are now a horrible grey colour, and my hand cursor is black with a white outline. Thunderbird has been particularly badly affected: there the menu bar has a dark grey background and black for the text colour. My gnome-relevant set up is `/usr/share/xsessions/xmonad.desktop` [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=XMonad Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=gnome-session --session=xmonad Icon=xmonad.png Type=XSession `/usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/xmonad.session` [GNOME Session] Name=Xmonad session RequiredComponents=gnome-settings-daemon;gnome-panel; RequiredProviders=windowmanager;notifications; DefaultProvider-windowmanager=xmonad DefaultProvider-notifications=notification-daemon Until a few days ago, this was giving me a very pleasant xmonad experience with a little gnome seasoning. But, it also seems as if I can't adjust my gnome settings. There's an Applications / System Tools / System Settings menu entry that hangs off the gnome-panel, and this allows the selection of themes from the Display option, but this doesn't seem to have any effect on what I see. I realise that this is more a Gnome question than an xmonad one, but my situation is more likely to be one that xmonad users understand and/or have encountered. I'd like to keep the gnome "seasoning" around if possible, but the way it looks at the moment is sooo ugly. Any advice gratefully received, Michael

It only displays the default ubuntu background image. No icons or menus. Some Gnome keyboard shortcuts work, e.g. Ctrl+Alt+t to launch a terminal. When the terminal is launched, it has no window chrome. Just the window contents and menu bar. From the launched terminal: $ bluetile Bluetile now launches fully and offers full functionality. Opening (so far) any gtk application's open dialog (file > open), and the dialog will not render, as if it were an invisible window. The proof of its existence lies in how it steals focus from its parent window and how the cursor changes when on top of it. When I move the dialog window, it appears and I can interact with it normally from there on out. This has happened with chromium, firefox, openoffice, and gvbam. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? See above. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? 0.9 on archlinux Are you using an xmonad.hs? Hide xmobar under windows

Ok, I am pretty sure this should not be too complicated to do, but I've been trying many ways to hide the xmobar under the windows and so far haven't achieved anything. Interesting thing is that many people report having this behavior as something undesirable, but that's precisely what I want. I don't want xmobar showing up on my workspace all the time, and wanted somehow to toggle it on and off. I have played with both toggleStruts in xmonad.hs and lowerOnStart = True | False in .xmobarrc, but got nothing. Maybe this is something very simple, but I'm not being able to do it.
