Problem with smartBorders, multiple screens, and fullscreen windows

Hi, I have a problem with fullscreen windows on my multi-monitor setup. After reducing my xmonad.hs bit by bit, I finally tracked down the problem to smartBorders from XMonad.Layout.NoBorders. How to reproduce: 1. Add smartBorders to your layout(s). 1. Make a window fullscreen (e.g. mplayer, virtualbox, flash) on one screen, say screen 1. 2. Change to an arbitrary hidden workspace on another screen, e.g. on screen 2. What I get: The content of the fullscreen window (on screen 1 in the example above) isn't updated anymore. In mplayer, for example, the video simply "freezes" while the sound keeps going. I can fix it by restoring the window and make it fullscreen again. Expected results: Nothing should happen to the fullscreen window. More information: I'm using xmonad 0.10 and xmonad-contrib 0.10 on Arch Linux. I can reproduce this on two machines with different graphic cards, Nvidia and Intel, so I don't think the problem lies with the graphic driver, which was my first suspicion. If I remove borders from all screens except the one with the fullscreen window (by using noBorders), I can switch workspace without "freezing" the fullscreen window. I was surprised that I couldn't find anyone else with a similar issue (except maybe Issue 311<http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=311>) - if someone else can reproduce this, please let me know and I'll submit a bug report. Even better, if someone could help me fix or work around the problem without losing the functionality of smartBorders, I would be extremely happy. Thanks, Hans

Set-up XMonad.Prompt.Shell with defaulXPConfig changing the searchPredicate to something else. e.g. \x y -> map toLower x `isPrefixOf` map toLower y 2. run your prompt, start typing anything to see that your searchPredicate is ignored. In the above example case IS ignored, so typing 'VI' should show 'vi' or 'vim' on the list, but they're not. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? latest darcs on up-to-date Archlinux x86_64 Are you using an xmonad.hs? Please attach it and the output of "xmonad --recompile". recompile prints nothing and my cluttered xmonad.hs is attached but only line 166 is related (which is a keybind to X.A.SpawnOn shellPromptHere). Please provide any additional information below. X.P.Shell also completes filenames using bash's compgen, it should respect user's setting (~/.inputrc) telling it to ignore-case (set completion- ignore-case on). But that's another problem, I'm just complaining about command completion for now. Dialog windows get overlapped in Gimp (floating layer)

Hi, can anybody give me an advice how to fix the following issue ? Whenever the Gimp is launched all its windows are put in a floating layer on reserved workspace: import qualified XMonad.StackSet as StackSet ... myManageHook = composeAll [ ... , className ~? "Gimp" --> shiftView "graphics" <+> doFloat ... ] where shiftView ws = doShift ws <+> doF (StackSet.greedyView ws) So far so good, the Gimp windows "gimp-image-window", "gimp-toolbox" and "gimp-dock" are properly moved to "graphics" workspace and sent to float. However if I invoke any dialog from the main window like "gimp-file-open" (File/Open from the menu) it is not placed as the top window but appears bellow "gimp-toolbox" and "gimp-dock" and I have to manually place it in front every time. Any idea how to fix this annoying glitch ? Thx xmonad 0.11

Running "echo 'àé' > /tmp/foo && hexdump -C /tmp/foo" gives "c3 a0 c3 a9 0a" in urxvt under xmonad here, and "echo 'àé' > /tmp/foo" via the shell prompt provided by XMonad.Prompt.Shell, followed by "hexdump -C /tmp/foo" in urxvt, displays "c3 83 c2 a0 c3 83 c2 a9 0a". X.P.Shell is explicitly calling encodeUtf8, but the base ghc libraries with 7.6.1 already do that if $LANG / $LC_ALL is set unless you call the lower level versions of these functions. (Which didn't exist in older versions of base, so we can't simply use those instead.)

Looking to deploy xmonad to ~20 employees

Hey all, I've been running xmonad for a while now, and I'm very happy with it, so happy in fact that I'm contemplating moving most of my employees from Windows XP to Linux with xmonad. Most of them are only using a specific set of applications, so we don't really need the extra hassle of having a WM/DE with all sorts of bells and whistles. I do though have a couple of issues: 1. We need to be able to run a legacy Windows application. I plan on solving this with VirtualBox, and I would like for my employees to have this application available fullscreen at workspace 1, but when I fullscreen the virtual XP on this workspace, the bottom part of Windows "fall out" below the monitor. This is because I have xmobar running. If I disable xmobar the problem goes away. But I only want to disable xmobar for this one workspace. Is there a way to disable struts on a single workspace, preferably in xmonad.hs? 2. I want to start a few programs on xmonad startup. What is considered best practice, .xinitrc or .xmonad.hs? 3. How can I change the shift+mod+[c|q] shortcuts to something insanely impossible? I don't want people killing stuff by mistake. 4. VNC access. I'm guessing this works just the same as with KDE/Gnome, but I'd be interested in hearing if anybody got some experiences to share. I guess that's all for now. I'm pretty excited about this, and I do hope everything can be made to work in a satisfactory way. :o) Thomas Løcke

Hi all, Please go easy on me as I'm a noob at this xmonad/Haskell lark, but I've exhausted my Google-fu. I'm running xmonad on Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm very happy with it, it works very well and I've happily made some minor changes like changing the keybinding for the default ALT key and using xmobar etc. However, I've had some problems getting the simple Tabbed layout working, I wanted to replace the Full layout with the tabbed layout. Drag a gnome-panel to a new location instead of using its Preferences dialog to reposition it. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? The layout is not recalculated to account for the relocated panel. There should be a handleEventHook for ManageDocks which checks for a change in the strut property (_NET_WM_STRUT or _NET_WM_STRUT_PARTIAL as appropriate) and forces the layout to be recalculated. Presently there is a little-known and mostly unused docksEventHook which only supports the case where a new dock is unexpectedly mapped; most of the time this is handled automatically because docks use EWMH properties instead of declaring themselves to be override_redirect. (Although this might also explain some cases where a dock does not behave properly until something does force a layout refresh.) Related to this, EwmhDesktops might want to invoke docksEventHook; while the normal case might currently be that it's not needed since one would expect an EWMH dock to use EWMH facilities instead of override_redirect, this will necessarily change if we add support for dynamically changing struts.

xmonad and remapping keys with xmodmap

I've recenly bought a new notebook that comes with a numeric keypad. I don't like numeric keypads, so I remapped the keys to generate the regular key codes for arrow keys, home, end, pgup and pgdown, etc xmodmap -e "keycode 83 = Left Left" ... In my xmonad.hs I use alt-shift-<arrows> for shrinking and expanding windows: ((modMask .|. shiftMask, xK_Left ), sendMessage Shrink) ... but when remapping strange things happen: - using the default keyboard layout, the normal arrow keys work with xmonad, but the numpad arrows do not ('KP_Left' is sent instead of 'Left', so that is to be expected) - I remap the numpad arrows to send 'Left' instead of KP_Left': xmodmap -e "keycode 83 = Left Left" ... - Xmonad now works with the keypad left arrow key, but the normal arrow key (that was not remapped) is no longer picked up by xmonad. It works for all other apps I tested, though. xev shows the normal key symbols when pressing the keys. Any advice on how to debug of fix this is much appreciated, Ico -- :wq ^X^Cy^K^X^C^C^C^C
