Issue 543 in xmonad: StackSet: non-positive argument to StackSet.new with mroe monitors than workspaces
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 23 Feb '15

23 Feb '15

Status: Accepted Owner: nome...@gmail.com New issue 543 by nome...@gmail.com: StackSet: non-positive argument to StackSet.new with mroe monitors than workspaces http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=543 At http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=706149 this bug was reported (Version 0.10): My xmonad configuration only sets up a single workspace: I create the rest dynamically as I need them. I use a laptop, and sometimes have an external monitor. If I have a single workspace when I attach the second monitor, xmonad fails to start. A minimal .xmonad.hs that exhibits the problem: --- 8< --- import XMonad import XMonad.Config.Gnome main :: IO () main = do xmonad $ gnomeConfig { workspaces = ["GTD"] } --- 8< --- Procedure for reproducing: * Use the above .xmonad.hs. * Log into a GNOME+Xmonad session in wheezy. * If there are two monitors, xmonad fails to start. * If there is a single monitor, this works. If I attach a second monitor, xmonad does not crash. However, re-starting it (e.g., due to a change to .xmonad.hs) doesn't work. The error message xmonad gives when starting up: xmonad-x86_64-linux: xmonad: StackSet: non-positive argument to StackSet.new I am probably unsual in liking to create my workspaces dynamically on demand. However, it would be good if xmonad would at least start even if it can't have something on every monitor. -- You received this message because this project is configured to send all issue notifications to this address. Issue 576 in xmonad: On FreeBSD Xmonad loses first hotkey sometimes
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 16 Feb '15

16 Feb '15

Status: New Owner: ---- New issue 576 by martin.s...@gmail.com: On FreeBSD Xmonad loses first hotkey sometimes http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=576 What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Install FreeBSD (amd64). 2. Write a minimal xmonad.hs with xterm binding. 3. Start xmonad in Xorg. 4. Try (multiple times) Mod+Shift+Return. What is the expected output? What do you see instead? It's expected that xterm opens with the first time Mod+Shift+Return is pressed. Sometimes Xmonad loses the key-combo and you need to press it twice in fast succession. If you wait too long between the first and the second time in sequence, the hotkey will be lost again and again. I repeat once again: it happens SOMETIMES, but on average every 4th time. Try to open terminal and exit it again (Mod+Shift+Return -> Ctrl-D -> Mod+Shift+Return -> Ctrl-D -> ...). What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? hs-xmonad-0.11_7 FreeBSD 10.0 RELEASE (amd64). Are you using an xmonad.hs? Please attach it and the output of "xmonad --recompile". You don't need mine. Use a minimal one: import XMonad main = xmonad defaultConfig { modMask = mod1Mask , terminal = "xterm" } Additional info: Cannot be reproduced on Linux. Everything works as expected there. -- You received this message because this project is configured to send all issue notifications to this address. Re: Issue 254 in xmonad: XMonad.Contrib.Util.Run.runInTerm does not work with terminal = "gnome-terminal"
by codesite-noreply＠google.com 06 Feb '15

Comment #6 on issue 254 by klu...@gmail.com: XMonad.Contrib.Util.Run.runInTerm does not work with terminal = "gnome-terminal" http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=254 I wrote a routine to double-quote and escape shell input, and it _seems_ to work for me. I've added it to Prompt.Ssh instead of changing runInTerm, but it logically belongs there. That is, I call ssh s = runInTerm "" (bashDblQuote ("ssh " ++ s)) where bashDblQuote is the quoting function. Attachments: dblquote.hs 866 bytes OtherSsh.hs 3.4 KB

Walking Fullscreen Windows
by Chris Bell 21 Jan '15

21 Jan '15

Hi all, I've noticed an interesting issue with some Fullscreen windows when using SmartBorders. I apologize in advance if this has been addressed - I couldn't find anything, but I'm not sure I was asking Google right. I am using the current release of Xmonad with SmartBorders. When I am running an application fullscreen, SmartBorders removes the borders, as it should. However, every time the window gains or loses focus, the window will grow by a pixel or two. Specifically, the lower right corner will extend down and to the right. All UI elements in the window follow accordingly. Specific example: Using Chrome to watch fullscreen HTML5 video (Netflix). Every time the window gets/loses focus, the UI elements will walk a pixel down, and extend a pixel right, like it's scaling to a resized window. When focus changes again, it again creeps. Eventually the window is far larger than the actual screen. When I leave/re-enter fullscreen, the size is initially correct. Then it starts growing again as I interact. Chrome has handled this admirably - the video simply scales up a couple pixels to compensate. Fullscreen (OpenGL) games, on the other hand, totally freak out. The graphics won't scale, instead a border of corrupt pixels slowly grows around the image; the new pixel rows/columns are filled with random data. I run 3 monitors, and if this happens on the left or center monitors, the windows start overlapping the screen to the right. It almost seems as if the window is getting hints from Xmonad that don't quite correspond to the actual dims, and it keeps compensating. The other idea is that SmartBorders is trying to cover up a border that it thinks exists, but really doesn't. Either way, I'm not quite sure where to start debugging. There's one glaring exception: I have defined a window hook to force VLC to go FullScreenFloat when FullScreen is detected (since VLC fullscreen didn't work out of the box). VLC's window *doesn't* creep like Chrome or any of the others do. Has anyone else seen this? Any fixes/debug suggestions? I'm really hoping I just screwed up something simple. Thanks! darcs patch: Layout.Spacing: Outer window edges now get as much spa...
by felixc＠felixcrux.com 07 Jan '15

07 Jan '15

Hello XMonad contributors! I've attached here my first patch to XMonadContrib; specifically to the Layout.Spacing component. This change makes it so that all edges of all windows have the same amount of space around them, regardless of whether they're up against the edge of the screen. This matches my personal preference, but I don't know whether the original behaviour was by design or if this style of spacing was already considered and rejected. I'd welcome any discussion on the pros and cons of doing things this way, as well as finding out whether anyone objects to this change. At the end of the day it's up to you whether this patch should be included. Thank you to geekosaur and fizzie in #xmonad for their help with the tricky question of determining whether a Workspace has just one window on it, for the smartSpacing part. All the best, Felix 1 patch for repository http://code.haskell.org/XMonadContrib: Thu Dec 18 20:47:34 EST 2014 Felix Crux <felixc(a)felixcrux.com> * Layout.Spacing: Outer window edges now get as much spacing as inner ones Layout.Spacing applies a customizable amount of space around the outside of each window. At window edges where two windows meet, the total distance between them is therefore twice the customized value (one space value from each window). At the edge of the screen, however, the spacing is only applied once. This results in uneven amounts of spacing and differently-sized gaps on the screen. This patch extends the Spacing layout to include a further gap all around the edge of the screen, thus making all spaces around windows equal in size.

putEnv from Prompt.Input
by Eric Mrak 05 Jan '15

05 Jan '15

I'm trying to set up a prompt to dynamically change environment variables (say, http_proxy). I'm using Prompt.Input (inputPrompt) to query for values such as "VAR=val" and passing those along to putEnv. The problem is when I start a new terminal using the standard mod+shift+enter the environment does not have VAR=val in it. Is there something I'm missing about how XMonad forks processes and passes along exported values? The only place putEnv seems to work is main, which is not dynamic. updateEnvVar :: String -> X () updateEnvVar s = catchIO $ putEnv s defaultConfig { ... } `additionalKeysP` [ ("M-e", inputPrompt myPromptConfig "set env" ?+ updateEnvVar) ] Thanks for any help

To what xmonad renames the Menu key?
by jenia.ivlev＠gmail.com 29 Dec '14

29 Dec '14

Hello. I typically swap the Menu and the right Ctrl keys. I used to do with xmodmap: remove Control = Control_R keysym Menu = Control_R keysym Control_R = Menu add Control = Control_R I just switch them around. The menu key becomes ctrl and the right ctrl becomes the menu key. This stopped working all of a sudden. Also, I noticed that the menu key has become the mod key. I'm wondering if xmonad remapped the menu to become the mod key? If yes, how is it called? Maybe "Mod_R", or "Mod_2" or something? Although, I tried these two names and it didnt seem to work. So again, how do I switch places the right Mod key and the right Ctrl? Thanks in advance for your time and help. Jenia.

How to start xmonad with lxde?
by jenia.ivlev＠gmail.com 28 Dec '14

28 Dec '14

Hello. I want to start xmonad in another tty. I would like it to use lxde as the Desktop Environement. I read that in order to do that I need to leave the following in the xmonad's config file (~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs): main = xmonad $ desktopConfig { terminal = "lxterminal" } When I recompile the file in xmonad: xmonad --recompile I get the following error: xmonad.hs:1:59: parse error (possibly incorrect indentation or mismatched brackets) Can someone please tell me how to achive starting xmonad with lxde? Thanks in advance for your kind help P.S To start xmonad in the first place (no lxde) I use this: startx /usr/bin/xmonad

xmodmap stopped working normally all of a sudden
by jenia.ivlev＠gmail.com 27 Dec '14

27 Dec '14

Hello. I used to have this xmodmap config: remove Control = Control_R keysym Menu = Control_R keysym Control_R = Super_L add Control = Control_R remove Lock = Caps_Lock remove Control = Control_L keysym Control_L = Caps_Lock keysym Caps_Lock = Control_L add Lock = Caps_Lock add Control = Control_L It used to work perfectly and it still works in LXDE. So, it must be that something changed in xmonad recently. The error I'm getting is that the "Menu key... its a non existant key". When I used `xev` and press the Menu key it tells me "keycode 135, Menu". So I'm wondering maybe xmonad somehow remaned this key to be Mod_R or something? I tried that actually, didnt seem to work. So my question is, how do I swtich the Right-Control and the Menu keys around? Also as I side note, started xmonad treats the Menu key as Mod key, but the applications still treat it as the Menu key. So when you press it - lets say you press "Mod_Right-1" this will do two things: 1. It will open a Menu in the current app. 2. It will switch to the desktop 2. So to reiterate, I need to switch the Mod_Right with Control_Right. And if possible, to completly remove the Menu key. Normally I achived this doing the following: remove Control = Control_R keysym Menu = Control_R keysym Control_R = Super_L add Control = Control_R Doesnt work anymore. Thanks in advance for your kind help and time. Jenia

How to make the menu key your mod key too?
by jenia.ivlev＠gmail.com 25 Dec '14

25 Dec '14

Hello. I set my mod key to be the "super" key. This setup needs two very precise and small additional features: 1. I'm really used to using the alt-tab for window switching. How can I set alt-tab to work for switching windows like before? Just to reiterate, even though I set mob to be "super key" before, I would like alt-tab to work as usual, like in vanilla xmonad. 2. And two, I would like there to be a mod key on the right side of the keyboard too. So I decided to use the "menu key" for that. How do I map my "menu key" to be mod too? I'm wondering if someone has done this or knows how to do it. Thanks very much in advnace for your kind help and concern. jenia ================================================================================= This is my config file: import XMonad import XMonad.Hooks.DynamicLog main = xmonad =<< statusBar cmd pp kb conf where cmd = "xmobar" pp = xmobarPP kb (XConfig {XMonad.modMask = modMask}) = (modMask, xK_b) conf = myConfig myConfig = defaultConfig { borderWidth = 2 , terminal = "urxvt" , modMask = mod4Mask }
