Refresh display, adapting to monitor resolution

Hello, Is there a way to have XMonad adapt the display to the resolution of the plugged monitor(s)? My problem is: at home, I have the laptop attached to one monitor. I suspend the session (systemctl hibernate), and resume it at work where I use a higher-resolution monitor. The display remains as it was set when starting the X session. The only way I have found to have the new monitor settings detected is to restart the X session (slim restart), which obviously kills user programs. So the question is: is there a command I can run to have the display adapt to the capabilities of the current monitor? Thanks for attention.

Is there a better way to write new layout? (Also modified Tall layout inside)

Hi, With being near impossible to get any non 16:9 monitor, and using big monitor (27" or bigger), any single terminal/editor takes entire screen when using Tall layout. This makes all the text aligned at the left edge of the monitor, which forces me to either sit facing the left half of the monitor or stretch my neck 90+% of time. I decided to modify Tall layout, so that with single window open it doesn't take all the space, while with more than one window open it behaves exactly as Tall already does. I am really beginner in haskell but I can do basic stuff, so I chopped built in Tall layout, modified it a bit, added to xmonad.hs. While it works well I am convinced there must be more elegant way to do the same, so I am curious how to do it better. Steps I took to make it work: 1. Chop LANGUAGE directive from xmonad-git/src/XMonad/Layout.hs and add to my xmonad.hs at the top. I would love to avoid having FlexibleInstances in my xmonad.hs. {-# LANGUAGE FlexibleInstances, MultiParamTypeClasses, PatternGuards, TypeSynonymInstances, DeriveDataTypeable #-} 2. Add new layout in the list, keeping standard Tall as second one. In rare cases when I want single window taking entire screen I can switch to Tall. As a result, when I open single terminal or editor window it is centered, simulating old 5:4 monitors. More than one window and it is standard Tall layout. I have attached my xmonad.hs if somebody wants to try. So finally questions: 1. Anybody needs this apart from me? How do you cope with 'teaminal/editor being too far to the left'? 2. Universal argument a lá Emacs for Xmonad

Dear all On Emacs you can pass certain functions an interactive argument via the C-u chord. For example you can press C-u 5 C-n to move 5 lines down the buffer. Sometimes I've wanted this functionality on XMonad, for example to be able to do stuff like `C-u 3 modm-m` to move to the third window counted from the main window if it exists. spawnOn in startupHook only works for one Nemo window, not the other

Hi, I'm using spawnOn in my startupHook to open various programs on various virtual desktops when logging in - it's quite nice to have that happen automatically. I start two instances of the Nautilus (file manager) fork Nemo: spawnOn "7" "nemo ~/video/" spawnOn "7" "nemo ~/video/tablet/" But only one of them ends up on desktop 7. The one other is placed on the current desktop. I have tried adding a "sleep 2;" to one of them, to see if it was some timing thing, but the same thing happens. I have also tried to combine them, and have one line starting "nemo ~/video/" nemo ~/video/tablet/", same thing. Oh, and as I am typing this, I realize that the second invocation probably doesn't start a lasting separate process, but messages the first to open a new window, and that original process then opens it, might be why spawnOn seems to "not work". Maybe I should just use manageSpawn to have all Nemo windows end up on desktop 7. I guess I have rubber ducked myself into the answer, but any comments are welcome regardless. Polybar covering on top of windows

CopyQ clipboard manager: misbehaving window?

Hello, I have been struggling to integrate the CopyQ clipboard manager into my configuration, because its main window cannot be closed: killing the window has no effect, and in the context of a scratchpad, the toggle does not work (the window appears but does not disappear). Minimizing the window does work; but then, it can only be maximized from the same workspace, which is not ideal for this use case. I have come up with a so-so solution: summon the window from a named scratchpad, and get rid of it by sending it to a NSP workspace: *("M-a", shiftTo Next (WSIs nsp))* *...* *where nsp = return $ ("NSP" ==) . W.tag* But it is cumbersome to have to manipulate two distinct keybindings (plus the latter might send an innocent window into a void). Is there an obvious solution that I am missing? PS: to be clear, I am only speaking about the window displayed by the CopyQ command `*copyq toggle*` (or `*copyq show*`). The smaller floating window displayed by the CopyQ command `*copyq menu*` does not have this issue; but is is also limited in functionalities and history length. PPS: I guess an improvement would be to integrate the above `*shiftTo*` function into a custom kill function, which would have two cases, depending of the name of the window. I do not know how to write this however, and would appreciate any pointers or suggestions. Thank you for attention.

windows overlap the task bar

Hello, I have been running xmonad for years on my desktop (Debian 7, then 8 and 9) and I am highly satisfied: this is the only one that prevents me to "try another thing"! On my laptop (ubuntu 18.04), the windows overlap the task bar though I use exactly the same xmonad.hs file as I do on my desktop. Could you help me ? Spent a fair bit of time improving my XMonad config, perhaps you'll find something useful

Hey all, I recently improved my XMonad configuration quite a bit, and figured that some of y'all might also want some of the things I implemented. The repo is: https://github.com/mgsloan/mgsloan-dotfiles The main larger chunks of code is using the rio package for logging and process running. Run processes also get wrapped in `systemd-cat`, which ends up being rather nice because `journalctl` has various structured ways of querying the logs. In particular, on workspace 9 I've got a couple terminals showing the most recent logs, as well as all error messages since boot. I've considered wrapping this up in a package, but only if there's interest in such a thing. There's lots of other stuff too, but most of it's quite a bit more specific to the particulars my setup. I've described the different parts of the config in readme.md in that repo. I hope you find something useful from it! -Michael

New virtual X mouse tool

This is only indirectly related to XMonad... For a while I've been using keynav to avoid reaching for the mouse for those few annoying circumstances which seemingly require a mouse. I did find that keynav sometimes saved me some energy, but I only found it useful for simple clicks. It does not seem useful if you want to click and drag a region, for example. Repeatedly bisecting the screen to narrow in on a point for the cursor is a fine approach and has some advantages, but I found myself wanting something more visceral: a little physics simulation to let me move the mouse around using the keyboard, like a video game. So I put this little utility together, in C++, and I have a keybinding spawn it from xmonad. It was an interesting challenge to make it single-threaded and still simultaneously run the physics loop, poll for X events, and send fake mouse events with XTest. I ended up designing it around channels (as in CSP) using boost::fiber. I hope someone finds it useful or entertaining! I had fun writing it. https://github.com/blak3mill3r/mouser

Changing workspaces on both physical screens

Hello, I am using xmonad on my Linux laptop and pdfpc (https://pdfpc.github.io/) for presentation. pdfpc uses two windows, one with current slide, next slides, notes etc. and the other one with the presentation only. I usually use workspace 8 on my laptop with the window with notes and workspace 9 on the projector with the presentation window. I sometimes switch workspaces to show code snippets in emacs etc. and I want to be able to quickly restore the "pdfpc" workspaces. I use the following binding: ((modMask .|. shiftMask , xK_p), (do windows (W.view "9"); swapNextScreen; windows (W.view "8"))) which may not be the most elegant solution :) Is there a more "haskell" way to do the same thing?
