I've sent this to the ML instead of pushing it because I'm not certain it's the right thing to do. It's intended to streamline getting new users running with ManageDocks, since that's nontrivial to explain over IRC and very, very common. XMonad.Hooks.ManageDocks.manageDocksConfig is intended as a drop-in replacement for defaultConfig. Extending the ManageHook is fine, but the layoutHook would be a little awkward. Spencer also pointed out that almost every config changes the layout. That's true even discounting the change of adding avoidStruts (ResizableTall, HintedTile, tabbed layouts, EWMH, etc. etc.), but that's fine: a user willing to make that kind of change will not hesitate to add avoidStruts on top of that. The goal here is that when a brand-new user comes into #xmonad and says "I'm using dzen but the windows are going underneath it/covering it", we can say "Create an xmonad.hs containing the lines import XMonad import XMonad.Hooks.ManageDocks main = xmonad manageDocksConfig and mod+q." I have no emotional attachment to this; it just occurred to me and I wrote it in five minutes. So if there's a good argument against it, it won't bother me if we just scratch this one. Your xmonad is sending data to xmobar, but if xmobar isn't displaying the information using a StdinReader, the pipe will gradually fill up. When it's full, xmonad will block trying to write to it, resulting in this freeze. Status: New Owner: ---- New issue 283 by sonuxp: Xmonad hangs up often http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=283 Xmonad on my system hangs up often which is very annoying The only common thing that I have found in common in all the 'hang ups' is an entry 'mtrr: type mismatch for d0000000,10000000 old: write-back new: write-combining' or 'bonobo-activation-server (akrohit-16111): could not associate with desktop session' in my /var/log/messages file These also occurs when I run gnome, but does not result in system freeze. When the above occurs I am not able to change workspace, neither am able to pop up menu to run any command. The only way out is killing X session by "Ctrl-Alt-Backspace" and relogin again. xmobar PipeReader doesn't work
