Sat Oct 6 19:31:13 CEST 2007 Christian Thiemann <mail(a)christian-thiemann.de> * Two new dynamic log functions that display the title of the currently focused window I liked the window-title-in-statusbar feature of dwm very much and wanted to have that in XMonad as well. Somewhere on the net I found some code to put into Config.hs (and sorry, that was last week and I already forgot where I got it from) which I modified and put into the DynamicLog extension. One can now set the logHook in Config.hs either to dynamicLogWithTitle to get the usual layout description and workspace list plus window title enclosed in angle brackets, or dynamicLogWithTitleColored "white" (or "red" etc.) to have xmonad print out some ^fg() markers for dzen to display the window title in the given color. Some windows (like terminals or browsers) change their window title from time to time but xmonad does not recognize this. So I started learning Haskell to provide patches for X11-extras and xmonad so that PropertyNotify events are captured and, if the event notifies about a WM_NAME property change, call the logHook to update the status bar. Why just name and class, when there are probably much more to match on? And note how this failed with the panel (where name and class is the same for the dialogs). For matching names, it's probably easier similar to the way it's done in XMonadContrib/XPropManage.hs: Provide a hook for manageHooks that uses a nother, Extension specific configuration to allow the user to specify hooks that match the name. This might be even more true with a unified hook system, where the user just list all extension he uses and does not worry about which hooks exist and are needed for what particualr extension. I got some ideas today, I'll post them separately later. (re: I could not find a way to change the label. The way I read it, DOCK means leave me alone at the position where I want to be (and probably above others)", STRUT means don't allow any other windows here". I also think we want to pass the window name and class to hooks -- it's used by practically every hook, and will make user hooks simpler. I think the list approach makes writing user rules more difficult: floatMyApp w _ "MyApp" _ = return (W.float ...) floatMyApp w _ _ _ = return id -- every single hook must add this default case I've changed the summary to "Composable manageHooks interface" because that is the real issue.
