can't compile darcs repository

Hi, I'm having problems compiling xmonad (see attached log) from the darcs repository (for reference I got it by darcs get --partial http://darcs.haskell.org/~sjanssen/xmonad <http://darcs.haskell.org/%7Esjanssen/xmonad>) The current official snapshot (from http://hackage.haskell.org/cgi-bin/hackage-scripts/package/xmonad-0.2 ) compiles and runs on the same machine: debian "lenny" - the output of ghc-pkg list is /usr/lib/ghc-6.6/package.conf: Cabal-1.1.6, base-2.0, (ghc-6.6), haskell98-1.0, mtl-1.0, parsec-2.0, readline-1.0, regex-base-0.71, regex-compat-0.71, regex-posix-0.71, rts-1.0, stm-2.0, template-haskell-2.0, unix-1.0 /home/avrozen/.ghc/i386-linux-6.6/package.conf: X11-1.2.2, X11-extras-0.2 Cheers, Avi. JabRef application window not painted

Hello, That's the only misbehaving application I was able to find. Some windows/dialogs are painted correctly, and others (main window) are just plain gray. This happens only under xmonad, other WMs do not trigger this behaviour. I guess it's applications fault and I've already reported this as a bug, but maybe someone else will have a clue why this might be happening. PS. Darcs version on Debian etch?

I'm trying to compile the most recent darcs version on Debian etch, but it requires a new X11-extras, and that complains that X11 is too old (etch has X11-1.2, X11-extras requires X11-1.2.1). What is an easy way to get the new xmonad compiled on Debian? I found http://haskell-unsafe.alioth.debian.org/haskell-unsafe.html but that seems to think that stable == woody, so I am reluctant to rely on it. tia, Kai

reserved keyboard shortcuts

after an update from darcs, i see alt-LeftArrow and alt-RightArrow are no longer used as shortcuts, which is nice because they are used in firefox. alt-b is still in the default, which is used to access the firefox bookmarks menu. i personally maintain a private Config.hs to deal with this, not sure if it is something worth addressing

xmonad, now with workspace info in status bars

So after some nudging from Rob, and Spencer, I added proper state logging to xmonad. If you set 'logging = True' xmonad will print its internal state to stdout on each state change. Then, using an external client, you can parse this info (the full state of the window manager!) and render it however you want. One use is to pretty print the workspace info into dzen, as if we had a built in status bar. There's a script in XMonadContrib now, scripts/xmonad-status.hs, which implements an example StackSet parser/pretty printer for status bars. You run this thing by piping the output of xmonad into the pretty printer, e.g. xmonad | xmonad-status | dzen2 -ta l -fg '#a8a3f7' -bg '#3f3c6d' We'll probably settle on a dwm/wmii-ish exapmle status bar to distribute with xmonad. -- Don

Issue 16: xmonad does not mark non-visible windows as iconified http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=16 Comment #5 by dons00: The fix, as is (iconify and unmap hidden windows), leads to quite a bit of awkwardness, unfortunately. Maybe this is why dwm doesn't do it. The issue is that in unmapping and iconifying hidden windows requires a robust way to distinguish unmapping due to iconify, from unmap due to delete. To do this we ignore real unmap events, hoping for a synthetic event to be generated. The benefit is: * you can reliably find out from X what windows are actually visible * we think this means flash on hidden workspaces won't steal focus The downside is: * it breaks xmonad in at least 3 obscure ways: + we no longer reliably get unmap events before focus events, on delete + breaks scan, which can't easily spot windows that are iconified (fixable) + clients like xpdf, that unmap, seem to confuse xmonad Without a reliable way to distinguish unmap/iconify/real from unmap/*real, we'll have to revert this, and follow dwm. Normal users should see no difference from xmonad 0.2.
