Almost all build problems with the darcs repo (all?) are due to not using the darcs version of X11-extras.
Grab that from:
darcs get --partial http://darcs.haskell.org/~sjanssen/X11-extras
The current official snapshot (from

compiles and runs on the same machine:
debian "lenny" - the output of ghc-pkg list is
