i found out more detials at last. the program started before xmobar can not occupy xmobar's gap, but other programs can. so it seems its not a problem anymore:) thanks lars On Mon, 05 Jan 2009, Roman Cheplyaka wrote:

[2009-01-04 17:26:37+0800] hi,
i just tried xmobar and it seems very nice. but a problem is that it's always on top, even after i toggle avoid struts. i want to make it disappear or stay in bottom after i toggle avoid struts off. is it possible? i really like real full screen mode.
Are you sure you've configured avoidStruts properly? Attach your config and we'll try to find the problem.
