I guess you have a ThinkPad?  Then you can alternatively use the right
ctrl key as Xmonad key:

  xmonad $ defaultConfig
       {
         -- ...
         -- Use Right-Control as modifier key.
         modMask = mod3Mask
       }

I have attached my ~/.xmodmap .
