I noticed this also with lxterm on the integrated Intel graphics card of a new Thinkpad with the default drivers. Using the discrete nVidia graphics card or xterm fixed the problem.
lxterm is from the same codebase as gnome-terminal, IIRC, and therefore is likely to share the same bugs. And several oddities of this kind are known to exist, apparently triggering a driver bug.
