I wasn't aware it was triggering a darcs bug. I'll try to look into it this weekend.
I recall that one going by on the list (in fact it's still in my inbox); the primary intent is to support prompting for a user. I've had in mind a similar notion, but more intelligent: tab-complete before an @ as user, after @ as host.
