Just to clarify myself, I don't ask you to comment on my ugly arrow implementation, but, in general, about what should be a good style for writing X applications with Xlib.

I'd start by taking one of the high level, small gui libraries (see on hackage), and then writing down on paper a set of combinators in a similar style. Then map those to X.
