See http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/xmonad/2014-October/014339.html. e.g. if you start xmonad with the environment-variable: $ export XMONAD_WORKING_DIR_NAME=$XDG_DATA_HOME && xmonad the directory in XDG_DATA_HOME will be used.
